WAILUKU-Defense had a hand in all of Lahainaluna's scoring in a 23-6 win against Konawaena Saturday night in the first round of the First Hawaiian Bank Division II state football tournament.

A sparse crowd of about 800 at War Memorial Football Stadium watched the Lunas (7-4) and Wildcats (11-2) combine for 133 yards of offense. And the victors had just 17 yards - 51 feet, all by rushing - to advance to a semifinal against Waipahu, 7 p.m. Saturday at the Masa Yonamine Athletic Complex.

The win completes a Valley Isle sweep of opening-round games. On Friday, Baldwin upset Farrington, 28-24, in Division I.

An otherwise superb performance by the Wildcats' defense, which had 22 tackles for negative yardage, went to waste as their offense gave the ball away eight times, seven by interceptions.

The Lunas, who listed 12 freshmen on their roster, got three picks from ninth-grader Scott Medeiros-Tagatailoa, two from junior Bryant Kaena Felicilde and one each from Semisi Filikitonga and Tytus Lucas.

The only fumble was returned 61 yards by Mark Alamon for a touchdown that gave the Lunas a 7-0 lead with 11:30 in the second quarter.

An interception by Filikitonga set up Lahainaluna's second TD, a 12-yard run by freshman Jared Rocha to make it 14-0.

The ensuing kickoff went out of bounds, giving the Wildcats possession at their 35. Seven plays later, Lii Karratti hit Austin Denis for 12-yard TD pass, but their 2-point conversion try failed, keeping it 14-6 at the half.

In the third quarter, a Lunas punt pinned the Wildcats at their 5. Two plays later, Filikitonga sacked Karratti in the end zone for a safety to make it 16-6 at the end of three quarters.

Then Felicilde's interception in the fourth quarter set up the Lunas' last score, Rocha's four-yard TD run with 45 seconds left in the game to make it 23-6.

The Lunas had only 17 yards of offense thanks to seven sacks by the Wildcats, four by tackle Michael Andrade, who also registered four other tackles for lost yardage.
