OIA tournament starts Wednesday


Four-time defending champion Pearl City is among 12 teams vying for six Division I state tournament berths in this week's O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red baseball tournament.

West champion Mililani and runner-up Pearl City, as well as East champion Kailua and runner-up Moanalua, draw opening-round byes.

The other eight teams in the tournament begin play Wednesday.

West 3 Leilehua will play East 6 Kahuku at Fred Wright Park in Wahiawa; East 3 Roosevelt will take on West 6 'Aiea at Stevenson Intermediate; and East 5 Kalani will travel to Kapolei. These games start at 3:30 p.m.

In a game that will be televised on OC16, East 4 Kaiser will play West 5 Campbell, 6:30 p.m. at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

In quarterfinals on Thursday, the winner of Kaiser-Campbell will play at Mililani; the winner of Leilehua-Kahuku will travel to Moanalua; the winner of 'Aiea-Roosevelt will visit Pearl City; and the winner of Kalani-Kapolei will go to Kailua. All games are at 3:30 p.m.

The quarterfinal losers will play in the fifth-place bracket games on Friday at the higher seeded team's home field. The quarterfinal winners advance to the semifinals Friday at the higher seeded teams fields. The quarterfinal winners will also secure state berths.

The championship is set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday at CORP. It will be televised on OC16. The third- and fifth-place games will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the higher seeded team's home.

The six-team White tournament begins Thursday with East 3 Kaimuki playing at West 2 Radford and West 3 Waialua taking on East 2 Farrington at Joe DeSa Field. Both games are at 3:30 p.m.

The winner of Kaimuki-Radford will play East champion Kalaheo at Kailua Intermediate, while the winner of Waialua-Farrington will visit West champion Waipahu.

The championship is set for 3:30 p.m. Saturday at CORP. This game also will be televised on OC16.

The third-place game is 1 p.m. Saturday at the higher seeded team's site.

The top four White teams earn Division II state tournament berths.
