Defending champ Punahou tops Roosevelt in OT, 2-1

WAIPAHU -- Shota Takada scored in the second minute of overtime yesterday to lift Punahou to a 2-1 comeback victory over Roosevelt in the first round of the JN Automotive/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Boys Soccer State Championships.

The Buffanblu improved to 8-2-1 in the regular and postseason and will face No. 3 seed and Big Island Interscholastic Federation champ Hilo (14-1-1) in today's 3 p.m. quarterfinal at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Roosevelt fell to 7-6-4 and into today's 1 p.m. consolation bracket game against O'ahu Interscholastic Association rival 'Aiea (8-6-3) on Field 8.

The Rough Riders, who finished fourth in the OIA, took a surprising 1-0 lead in the 50th minute on a goal by Brad Pena, who took a shot from about 20 yards out on the left flank.

Punahou tied it at 1-1 in the 62nd minute on a shot by Ian Matsukawa in front of a crowded goal.

Takada then scored the game-winner from close range two minutes into overtime.

KAISER 4, WAIAKEA 3, OT

Brandon Ale scored on a header in the third minute of overtime to lift the Cougars (12-2-2) in a wild, back-and-forth action-packed game.

Kaiser, the OIA runner-up, will face No. 4 seed and Maui Interscholastic League champion King Kekaulike (8-3-1) in today's 1 p.m. quarterfinal. Waiakea fell to 12-3-2 and will face Moanalua (7-7-3) in a consolation bracket game at the same time on Field 7.

Zachary Yen put the Cougars up, 1-0, in the fifth minute on a shot from about 20 yards out that went over the goalkeeper, but the Warriors tied it one minute later on an own goal by Kaiser.

The Cougars took a 2-1 lead in the 49th minute on Jason Khomvongsa's shot from point-blank range, but Waiakea tied it again a minute later when James Yamane scored on a penalty kick after a foul in the box.

Kaiser went ahead, 3-2, in the 64th minute on a goal by Tyler Costa, but the Warriors answered again a minute later when Nu'u Aiava scored to help send it into overtime.

BALDWIN 1, 'AIEA 0

Jaron Otani scored the game's only goal in the 72nd minute for the Bears, the MIL runner-up who improved to 7-2-4 and will face No. 2 seed and OIA champ Kapolei (10-5-1) in today's 5 p.m. quarterfinal.

MILILANI 2, MOANALUA 0

Renato Torquato scored in the 71st minute, and John Cunningham added another goal in the 76th as the Trojans improved to 12-2-2 and advanced to face No. 1 seed and ILH champ Kamehameha (7-1-2) in today's feature quarterfinal at 7.
