WAIPAHU -- Kaylin Okuma scored the game-winner in the 85th minute last night as Punahou survived a scare from Kamehameha-Maui, 1-0, in the JN Automotive Group/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Girls Soccer State Championship semifinals.

The No. 1 seed and Interscholastic League of Honolulu champ Buffanblu improved to 11-1-1 in the regular and postseason and will face surprising Kahuku (9-6-3) in tonight's 7 o'clock semifinal at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

The game will be televised live statewide on OC16.

Okuma, a junior who played varsity basketball as a freshman and sophomore before switching to soccer this season, found the net in traffic in front of a crowded goal box.

Kamehameha-Maui (14-2-1) had a breakaway opportunity late in regulation but could not convert.

KAHUKU 3, HILO 1

The Red Raiders, who finished sixth in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association, continued their surprising run with a convincing victory over the No. 4 seed and Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Vikings (12-1-2).

Hilo took a quick 1-0 lead in the fourth minute on Tiffany Kerr's penalty kick after a foul in the box, but Kahuku tied it 10 minutes later on Shanice Moe's throw-in that deflected off a player and into the goal.

The Red Raiders scored on another improbable play in the 40th minute, when Genie Hyatt's looping shot from about 40 yards out near the left sideline took a high bounce over the keeper's head and into the net.

Alana Aluli later sealed the victory with another long-distance goal from about 30 yards out on the left flank that sneaked into the right lower corner of the net.
