University High rallies past Kalani, 55-47


Quynne Eharis scored 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds last night to help University High rally past Kalani, 55-47, in the first round of the Hawaiian Airlines/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Girls Basketball Division II State Championships.

The Junior Rainbows improved to 12-2 in the regular and postseason and will face No. 3 seed and Big Island Interscholastic Federation DII champ Kamehameha-Hawai'i (11-4) in tonight's 7 o'clock quarterfinal at Kaimuki.

The Falcons fell to 12-5 and into today's 3 p.m. consolation bracket game against Wai'anae.

Last night at Kaimuki, Kalani jumped out to an 11-2 lead behind two 3-pointers by Corie Kuia and one by Taylor Murai. Eharis, though, scored 12 points to help UHS close it to 25-22 by halftime and then added nine more points in the fourth period as the Junior 'Bows overtook the Falcons.

Kaiana Iaea's 3-pointer broke a 42-42 tie with 3:38 remaining and hit another one with 1:51 left to make it 50-42.

Eharis, a 5-foot-11 post, made 11 field goals close to the basket and sank 6 of 8 free throws. Kuia finished with 23 points, including three 3-pointers.

MARYKNOLL 46, WAI'ANAE 34

At Kaimuki, Ashlee DeSantos scored 10 points for the Spartans, who jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first four minutes and never trailed.

Maryknoll (12-2) will face No. 2 seed and Maui Interscholastic League DII champ Moloka'i (8-0) in today's 5 p.m. quarterfinal at Kaimuki.

Lacy Manuel scored a game-high 12 points for the Seariders.
