Changes affect football scheduling
There will be one fewer football team, a league will play primarily during the day and five teams will switch from Division I to Division II for the 2010 high school football season.
With the closure of Word of Life Academy, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu will revert to six teams for the first time since 2007. That means this season, Division I and II will play the same number of regular season games, seven. The past two seasons, Division II played nine games because of the addition of WOLA in 2008.
Meanwhile, the Kauai Interscholastic Federation will move its usual Friday night games to Saturday afternoon starting Sept. 18 to save the federally-protected Newell's Shearwater.
Lights from the school fields, as well as street lights, cause the birds to get disoriented when flying at night. The birds are known to collide with power lines, according to the Audubon web site.
The KIF could be fined $30,000 per bird that dies because of a stadium's lights. The birds' population has declined 60 percent during the 1990s, the web site said. The shearwater has been deemed threatened by the federal government since 1975.
The switch to day games might affect attendance, Waimea athletic director Jon Kobayashi said.
"I predict that it will, but we don't know until it happens," he said.
For a competitive game, the KIF draws 2,000 to 3,000 spectators at games, Kobayashi said.
"The revenue from football supports all of the other sports," he said.
The Oahu Interscholastic Association made its biennial division changes.
Kaiser and Moanalua were promoted from the White to the Red East, while Aiea and Radford moved up to the Red West.
Moving from the Red to the White were Kaimuki and McKinley from the Red East, and Nanakuli and Waipahu from the Red West.
In the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, Honokaa dropped to Division II, which has increased to six teams. With the loss, Division I has four teams: Hilo, Keaau, Kealakehe and Waiakea. That means Division II's regular season schedule increases to 10 games, while Division I is reduced to six games. The BIIF plays two rounds.
The football season starts Aug. 13 with nonleague competition.
