Kailua hosts Wai'anae in OIA quarterfinal

Kailua will play host to Wai'anae at 7:30 tonight in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association football quarterfinal matchup of finesse vs. power.

The game will be televised live statewide on OC16.

The Surfriders, 5-3 and No. 9 in the ScoringLive-OC16 Power Rankings, feature the state's leading passer in sophomore quarterback Kahaku Iaea, who has completed 159 of 288 attempts (55.2 percent) for 1,953 yards and 15 touchdowns. His favorite target, senior receiver Eric Lum, leads all receivers with 49 catches for 797 yards (16.3 ypc) and nine TDs.

Kailua was the surprise runner-up in the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division by winning five straight games after an 0-2 start.

Wai'anae, 3-5, rebounded from an 0-3 start to finish third in the OIA Red West.

The Seariders have a balanced ground attack led by Bryson Panui (382 yards on 72 carries, 5.3 ypc) and Jaylen Mitchell (344 yards, 38 carries, 9.1 ypc). Senior quarterback Puletua Wilson is a duel threat, having thrown for 423 yards and four touchdowns and rushing for 260 yards and seven TDs.
