The O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red (Division I) Football Tournament rolls on this weekend with four quarterfinal games at school fields. The top seeds from both the Eastern and Western divisions will make their postseason debut, but just one of the pairings features two ranked teams.

When No. 8 Farrington visits third-ranked Mililani Friday, it will be a battle of contrasting styles on the gridiron. The Govs (6-3), who are the fourth seed out of the East, have relied on their punishing ground attack, while the West champion Trojans (7-1) feature a more balanced attack offensively.

The game will be played at Mililani's John Kauinana Stadium and will follow a JV game between Farrington and Leilehua at 5 p.m.

Farrington is on a two-game winning streak after shutting out Aiea, 10-0, in a first-round playoff game last week. The Govs got off to a 3-0 start and appeared to be a serious contender for the league title, but faltered with regular-season losses to Castle, Kahuku and Kailua - all road games.

Senior tailback Scotland Smith has rushed for 610 yards and five touchdowns on the season (5.2 yards per rush) to help the Govs average just under 164 rush yards per game. In a 21-12 non-league win over Kamehameha early in the season, Smith carried 23 times for 132 yards with a TD. The following week, he put up 154 yards on 18 attempts (8.6 ypr) in a losing effort at Castle.

Defensively, Farrington is led by its trio of standout linebackers in Lancelot Williams, Justin Vele and Mo Tauaefa. The Govs' stingy defense allows just 191.9 yards and 13.4 points each time out, but could have its hands full against a Trojan offense full of weapons.

Senior quarterback Trent McKinney is among the state's leaders with 1,489 passing yards. He has completed 67 percent of his passes with a 4-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. McKinney has thrown for 16 TD's against just four INT's this year. He has also rushed for 438 yards and 11 scores.

His favorite target has been 6-foot-4 wideout Hassan Richardson, who has 480 receiving yards and six TD's on the season, but the Trojans' second-leading receiver, Bryson Calma, will not be available Friday after suffering a broken ankle in Wednesday's practice session.

Running back Zachary Payomo broke the 1,000-yard mark in his final regular-season game and averages 7.4 yards per rush with 10 TDs. The senior was a workhorse in the Trojans' 35-28 double-overtime victory over Leilehua two weeks ago. He carried 30 times for 152 yards against the Mules and earlier in the season, he found the end zone five times in a win over Aiea.

Mililani puts up over 410 yards of offense on average while its defense allows 257.3 yards and 20.8 points per game. Brandon Takadena leads a small, but quick defensive line while safeties Elijah Langafuaina and Kaimi Wilson patrol the secondary.

The four quarterfinal winners move on to next week's semifinal round at Aloha Stadium. The top three teams from the OIA qualify for the state tournament.
