Kapolei storms past Maui into the quarterfinals

MANOA—Kapolei trailed early, but broke away in the third inning to dice up Maui, 15-7 in the opening round of the DataHouse/HHSAA Division I Softball State Championships at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Hurricanes (7-8 overall) set up their fourth meeting of the season with top-ranked and seeded Campbell (13-0 overall) in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Kapolei has yet to beat the Sabers from Ewa Beach.

The Sabers (10-4 overall) face Kaiser (12-4 overall) in the consolation bracket and winner will face the winner of Hilo/Leilehua.

Breani Kahalehau hit one of her two home runs in Maui's four-run first inning.

Kayara Tuiloma blasted a two RBI and Hayden Imai (4-for-4) doubled to help Kapolei reclaim the lead with six runs on five hits and three errors.

Paige Beatty bought the Sabers within a run a grounder up the middle in the second.

The Hurricanes scored three of their four runs off errors in the third, but Maui answered with a pair of home runs from Jer-Zee Ragasa and Kahalehau to get the Sabers within three but could not get any closer. 

Chenoa Cainglit's double to right brought in two of the Hurricanes' three runs in the fourth.

Ragasa was tagged with the loss after allowing 14 hits, of the 15 runs, eight were earned.

Kandi Malama-Ahlo went the distance with three strikes and five walks. Her home run to left field scored the final runs of the game.
