Richardson came up clutch for Maui; Ah Yat keeps PAC-5 rolling

Jonah Richardson played the hero in more ways than one for the Maui baseball team last week.

The senior pitcher tossed a complete game shutout in a 8-0 win over King Kekaulike on Wednesday before hitting a two-out game-winning double the next day for a 5-3 walk-off win over Na Alii in eight innings.

At the plate Richardson batted .385 in the three game series with Kekaulike, notching three RBIs and two doubles as the Sabers started Maui Interscholastic League play with a 3-0 record and rose to the No. 1 spot in the power rankings.

"Great kid, fierce competitor. He's a gamer for sure," Maui coach Chase Corniel said of Richardson.

On opening day, the Maui ace allowed just two hits in seven innings. He used just 87 pitches in the complete game win, striking out six against one walk.

"He did a great job, threw a lot of strikes and had great command," said Corniel. "He only gets stronger throughout the game. That's the great thing about him. He can throw strikes at will at any given count."

Richardson pounded his fast ball early before using a curve ball to record the second strike versus the second batter he faced. He then went back to his fast ball to record a swinging strikeout against Nainoa Pascual.

He also had a swinging strikeout to start the bottom of the second. Starting with a change-up before alternating fast balls that were fouled off and curve balls to make it a full count when he struck out Jaxon Wong.

The third strikeout that Richardson got was on a 2-2 count to retire the side in the bottom of the third. The Maui senior got CJ Tamayose to foul off on a change-up and swinging on a fast ball early in the at bat before throwing a slider for a ball to set up a fast ball down the middle for a strikeout looking.

"His fast ball is pretty much up there," said Corniel. "He has a great repertoire of pitches and he can throw strikes at any given time. I think that's what separates him from the other pitchers in the state, not to mention his mentality. He's ready to compete and ready to get after anyone that comes across him."

Corniel added that Richardson's fast ball "sits up in the upper 80s" and that during the summer he reached 90 miles per hour while playing in the mainland.

"He has that ability. His fast ball is good enough to blow guys by if they're sitting on that off-speed stuff."

Richardson ran into some trouble in the fourth however. After striking out Pascual for a second time, he beaned Kamakalei Stone to put the first Kekaulike player on base. Richardson then walked Wong after two fast balls went for ball three and ball four. Na Alii would load the bases one batter later when Lea Poouahi had a two-out single to right field. A groundout to third baseman Nicholas Nashiwa ultimately ended the threat to help Richardson maintain the shutout.

"He had some tough calls go against him a little bit, but he understands that with pitching, that he has to have some defense with him," said Corniel. "He can't always shut down an offense so he understands when he has to settle down and hit his spots and let his defense work for him."

Richardson's first pitch in the bottom of the fifth went for a base hit, but he had a heads up play on the next at bat to get the double play when he hustled to pick up a ground ball before throwing to shortstop Chris Mata, who then fired a ball to Drechen Vinoray-Perreira at first base.

"He's an infielder too and can play third base," Corniel said of Richardson making the double play. "He has pretty good foot work and we work a lot on pitcher fielding practice. He knew where to deliver the ball."

Richardson flexed his ability at the plate the following day batting cleanup as the designated hitter.

"He does love to hit too," said Corniel. "I think he understands that in college he might not have that luxury to hit so he's really soaking it in. He's one of our better hitters too. He's no slouch at the plate. He loves to do it and he always wants to be a part of the game."

Kekaulike took an early 1-0 lead in the second game of the three-game series before Maui plated two runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead. Na Alii responded with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth to retake the lead all the way until it was the middle of the seventh.

Richardson was 0-for-3 before that point, but he came up with a timely hit in the seventh to move Nariyuki Dumlao to third base to set up Nashiwa's game-tying RBI that scored Dumlao.

The Maui senior that came up clutch in the extra inning with a two-out double to right field to bring home Ekolu Arai and Dumlao for the walk-off win.

"He was definitely telling us in the dugout that he wanted to be out there and win the game for the team. I think he was willing himself a lot to be ready for that moment and it came through for us," Corniel said of Richardson's game-winning hit.

"I saw some frustration too on his end on his previous at bats, but he definitely wanted to redeem himself and he was looking for that moment."

In the third game of the series, Richardson got the start at first base as the Sabers registered another shutout with Chris Mata getting the complete game win on the mound.

Richardson made a handful of outs at first in the shutout, which included a lineout for the first out of the seventh inning and an unassisted groundout for the second out of the frame.

"He'll dow whatever it takes to contribute to the team," Corniel said. "He carries that third base mentality to first. He wants the ball and he wants to shine too on the field. He's definitely an above average first baseman. We welcome him to play first base as well."

After high school Richardson will continue his playing career at Arizona Western, with hopes to eventually reach the Division I ranks collegiately.

"In the future he knows he needs to prepare himself for that, whatever the road maybe. He has his sights on Division I and he knows he has to work towards it," Corniel said.

Richardson and the Sabers will continue MIL play on Thursday when they begin a three-game series against Kamehameha-Maui.

Milan Ah Yat brought out the big guns last week for the PAC-5 softball team.

The senior shortstop blasted four total home runs in back-to-back games to help the Wolfpack pick up their third and fourth straight win.

Ah Yat, who earned ILH Division II Player of the Year honors a year ago, totaled nine total RBIs and scored nine total runs throughout the week while going 8-for-11 at the plate.

"She's just a very great kid," said PAC-5 coach Blake Lau. "Great hitter, great attitude. She's a leader out there everyday. She picks up all the kids. She leads the kids always with positivity out there. Works real hard."

Like she was for the University Lab girls volleyball team that won its first state title since 1990 a season ago, Ah Yat has been the "go-to hitter" for the Wolfpack and Lau.

"She's just one-of-a-kind athlete," Lau said of Ah Yat, who will continue her playing career at Loyola Maramount University.

Lau, who also coached Ah Yat when she was in the Wolfpack's intermediate program, described her as a "coach's dream.

"You're not going to find another player like that. Any coach will love to have her. Great team player, great role model. We can be losing and be down, but she inspires the kids. Nothing bad comes out of her mouth. She's a beast out there. She's an animal. She's going to leave her heart and soul out there."

She just went 1-for-3 at the plate in an eight-inning 4-3 win over Sacred Hearts last Tuesday, but she made a handful of plays in the field to keep the Lancers at bay.

Sacred Hearts scored first in the bottom of the first before Ah Yat combined with first baseman Kate Iida to prevent any more runs from being scored. She also was the final cog in a 5-3-6 relay that ended the game in a double play after a groundout to third baseman Kylie Oshita.

"Milan in the infield, she's like a vacuum," Lau said. "Defensive wise she controls the infield. She makes good plays, very smart."

Her next game against Kamehameha I-AA really showcased her talents at the plate as she went 4-for-4 with five runs scored, four RBIs and three home runs in a 13-10 win last Thursday.

The Warriors got on the board first with a two-run homer in the opening frame, but Ah Yat had a solo homer to right field after taking strike one looking to cut into the deficit.

Kamehameha's lead grew to 5-1 after the next half-inning and to 8-1 after the top of the third before Ah Yat scored the Wolfpack's second run on catcher Chloe Horikawa's double. PAC-5 would use the momentum to make it 8-5 after three innings.

There was no hesitation on Ah Yat's next at bat. She led off the bottom of the fourth with a first-pitch homer to left field to make it a two-run game.

"When she's at the bat, I don't even question her," said Lau. "Just go out there and look to hit base hit, home run. It's going to come. Once she swings the bat, she swings it with authority."

Ah Yat was responsible for the next run when she singled on a ground ball to left field to score Oshita. She also reached on a walk and would score with the bases loaded when Rylee Abeshima drew a walk in the same inning. This helped PAC-5 take a 11-8 lead after the fifth.

Kamehameha scored two runs in the top of the sixth on a home run and a triple to make it 11-10 before Horikawa and Ah Yat worked together to catch a runner stealing to end the threat.

Ah Yat gave PAC-5 a little bit more insurance in the bottom of the sixth with a home run to centerfield to make the score 12-10.

The next day she went 3-for-4 with five RBIs, three runs scored, two doubles and a home run as the Wolfpack blasted the Lancers in six innings, 11-1.

She had an RBI to score Kaiya Tom for the first run of the game to help PAC-5 take a 3-0 lead after the first inning. Ah Yat then had a first-pitch home run to center field to score herself and Oshita to make the score 5-0 in the third inning.

"Every time she comes up, she's going to hit the ball," said Lau. "When she comes up to at bat, I try to fill the bases up coming up to her."

The senior shortstop continued to drive in more runs as she doubled on a hard ball to left field to bring Tom in to make it 6-0. Ah Yat later scored on a line drive by Horikawa to give the Wolfpack a 7-0 lead.

Her final at bat of the day produced an RBI double to score Oshita to make it an 8-1 game before she came on home on an Elyse Yoshioka single for an eight-run lead.

Ah Yat continued her strong run at the plate with a 2-for-2 performance with two runs scored in a 6-0 win over Damien on Tuesday night.

The Wolfpack will next take the field in a 4 p.m. contest at Sand Island Park on Thursday.
