Pearl City rebounds to blank Kalani on homecoming night

PEARL CITY — Ikaika Torres stepped in to throw two touchdown passes and the defense pitched a shutout in Pearl City's 17-0 win over Kalani at Edwin "Bino" Neves Stadium Friday.

After suffering their first OIA Division II loss to Nanakuli (5-1 overall, 5-0 OIA) last week, the Chargers bounced back into the win column to improve to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in league play.

The Falcons dropped their second consecutive game to fall to 2-5 overall, 2-4 in the OIA.

Torres filled in for Trey Dacoscos, who did not suit up while recovering from an injury. The freshman threw for 152 yards on 13-of-20 passing and was picked off twice by Kalani's Aiden Trinidad. Ikaika targeted his brother, Koalii Torres, who had seven catches for 57 yards.

Bobby Best took the pressure off Torres and rushed for 118 yards on 21 carries and Shaedyn Quemado had 56 yards on 15 carries to help the Chargers average 4.2 yards per carry.

Duke Corso recovered the fumble on the Pearl City 1 after a bad exchange, but Kalani squandered away the opportunity and turned it over on downs.

The Falcons' seven first half offensive series resulted in five punts and two turnover on downs. In the second half, two of their three offensive drives were punts and a turnover on downs.

Bradley Kansou added 68 receiving yards and caught the first touchdown pass from Ikaika Torres from 34 yards out for a 7-0 lead that held up until halftime.

Marcus Rodriguez kicked in a 34-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead with 6:28 to go in the third quarter and caught a 2-yard touchdown pass from Torres in the fourth to put the game away.

Silas Tina Soberano led the Falcons with 57 receiving yards and Chris Holt had 56 yards.

Koa Colburn had nine tackles to lead Kalani's defense and Trinidad had seven total tackles to go with his two picks. Kalekona Spencer had a busy night, not only doubling up as the punter, but he added six tackles including a sack.

Zadrin Kaulia had seven total tackles and Dorian Payton-Sherman chipped in five tackles, one went for a sack, and three other Chargers had four tackles.

Pearl City wraps up the regular season finale against Waialua (3-4 overall, 2-3 OIA) on Friday, Oct. 7 while Kalani takes on Kaiser (3-3, 3-2) on the same night.
