KALIHI — Kahuku girls volleyball coach Tuli Tevaga wanted her team to have more than a good showing.

She wanted a consistent showing — and the Red Raiders delivered just that in a straight set sweep over Farrington Wednesday night in an OIA East match at Kitamura Gymnasium.

Set scores were 25-19, 25-21 and 25-20.

Fourth-ranked Kahuku improved to 8-0 in league play with the win as it locked up a first round bye in the 12-team OIA Division I playoffs, which begins mid-October. The Red Raiders can solidify the East's No. 1 seed in the tournament with a win next week against Kailua or Kalaheo.

"They kept the mission in mind," Tevaga said of her team's win. "There's an overall mission to accomplish for everyone on the team, whether you're on the court or on the bench. Whenever you're called upon, you got to show up. Everybody played their part tonight, which resulted in the overall success of the team."

Sophomore outside hitter Chalei Reid was her usual self against the Governors (6-2) — finishing with a match-high 18 kills with six digs, four blocks and an ace — but she wasn't alone as nine differed Kahuku players registered a kill in the win.

Mele Taumoepeau was the next highest attacker with nine kills and six blocks. Mao Lauhingoa followed with seven kills and four blocks (two solo) and Kaliko Schilling had five kills with two aces. Lauhingoa was also pivotal in the opening set as she came alive after the set was tied at 15 and Schilling was responsible for the set-clinching point in the second game when she knocked one down the line from the right side.

Maia Esera added four kills with three blocks, Maryann Tulele came through with two kills late in the third set and Shaianne Tausoga was also responsible for two points. Setters Dani Kapu and Madison Mamizuka also got in the attack and combined for three kills. Hehea Pulotu stabilized the back row with 11 digs.

"We are trying to create a well-balanced offense so it was really nice to see," Tevaga said.

Kahuku's block also played a factor as the Red Raiders tallied 10 total blocks to Farrington's two.

Leading the Governors in the loss was Jorja Williams and Aleejah Sunia, who each had eight kills. Lia Aiwohi led Farrington defensively with a match-high 14 digs.
