KS-Hawaii airs it out to rout Hawaii Prep

KEAAU, Hawaii — The Kamehameha-Hawaii football team ended its 2021 season with a bitter taste in its mouth.

That feeling was replaced with sweet victory Friday night.

The Warriors avenged a 3-0 loss to Hawaii Prep in last year's BIIF Division II championship game with a 45-0 rout over Ka Makani to begin league play at Paiea Stadium.

Quarterbacks Michael Perry and Jadin Chaves combined for 269 passing yards and four touchdowns to spark KS-Hawaii, who improved to 2-0 overall.

"We're just a way better team this year," said senior receiver Ty Watterson. "We just played really hard tonight and came up with the win."

Watterson was responsible for the longest scoring play of the night, a 40-yard TD pass from Perry to give KS-Hawaii a 38-0 lead with 23 seconds left in the first half.

"The plan was all of us just to run streaks," said Watterson. "Mike had a lot of time in the pocket so he was just scrambling around and then he found me. I was just running down the field and I was open."

Watterson was one of four different players to catch a touchdown pass. Makaiokalani Snyder caught an 8-yard TD pass early in the second quarter from Perry, Kekainalu Fuerte hauled in a 9-yard scoring strike from Jadin Chaves and Javan Feary scored on a a 30-yard TD pass early in the third quarter to round out the receivers that hit pay dirt. Chandler Matsuyama was also key with a 50-yard reception.

"We have a lot of good receivers on this team," said Watterson. "Our quarterback can find everyone and throw to everyone."

While the aerial attack stood out on the stat sheet, Tobey Lau also deserves mention. The 6-foot, 225-pound senior had a solid two-way game as a running back and a linebacker. He rushed six times for 32 yards and scored on 3-yard run to open the game's scoring and also ran in a 2-point conversion. Lau also made 8 and 1/2 tackles with three sacks and a forced fumble, fumble recovery and a pass breakup.

Kicker Elijah Dinkel was also solid with three field goals and four PATs. His longest scoring boot was from 40 yards out.
