Wilbur's 4 TDs paces No. 14 Waianae against Castle

KANEOHE - Tailback Tevin Wilbur rushed for four touchdowns and 122 yards and No. 14 Waianae downed host Castle, 26-6, Saturday night in both teams' openers.

The non-league win came in former University of Hawaii defensive coordinator Thom Kaumeyer's debut as the Seariders' coach. He is their third coach in as many official seasons. Mike Fanoga coached in 2019 - there was no 2020 season because of COVID - but left shortly before the start of the 2021 season and JV coach Matt Murakawa took over as interim coach for the season. The job was opened to the public after the season and Kaumeyer, who was coaching in the Japanese pro leagues, was hired in May. He also is a health teacher at Waianae.

Wilbur, a 5-foot-7, 180-pound senior, also had three receptions for 31 yards. He scored on runs of 33 yards and 1 yard in the third quarter; 4 yards in the second and 5 yards in the fourth. His 17 rushing attempts led all ball carriers.

The only blemish for the Seariders was 18 penalties totaling 221 yards

Coby Tanioka paced the Knights with eight receptions for 123 yards; he scored Castle's sole touchdown on a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter to shave his team's deficit to 19-6 early in the fourth quarter.

Two special teams issues for Castle led to Waianae's first two scores. A high snap from punt formation gave Waianae the ball at Castle's 33, where Wilbur scored on first down with four minutes, 37 seconds left in the first quarter. The PAT failed, but the Seariders took a 6-0 lead. Later in the quarter, a 14-yard punt to Castle's 42 gave the Seariders another short field. The seven-play drive ended with Wilbur scoring from the 1 with 57 seconds left in the first. Kaden Nauer's PAT made it 13-0.

An interception by Shayd Borabora midway through the second quarter set up Wilbur's 4-yard TD run. A 2-point conversion pass was incomplete by Tarent Moniz-Babb to keep it 19-0 with 51 seconds left in the half.

After a scoreless third period, Castle moved 72 yards in eight plays - the drive kept alive with a 46-yard pass from Daunte Ching to Tanioka on third-and-17 from the Knights' 23 - with Tanioka scoring on a 5-yard run. The PAT was blocked, but the Knights cut their deficit to 19-6 with 9:16 left in the game.

An interception by Alvin Kalahiki IV with 3:41 left in the game set up Wilbur's fourth TD of the game, a 5-yard run with 2:06 left. Nauer's PAT made it 26-6.

Castle will host Punahou in two weeks on Aug. 19, while Waianae draws a bye next week.
