Male Newcomer of the Year: Kainoa Carvalho, Kahuku football

The junior receiver and returner was simply dazzling for the state champion Red Raiders last fall. Carvalho posted 64 receptions for a state-best 1,029 yards and 10 touchdowns. He closed out the season with six consecutive games of 100-or-more receiving yards, including a season-best 10 catches for 194 yards and two TDs against Mililani. The 5-foot-7, 160-pound Carvalho returned five kicks for TDs on the year, including two kickoffs he took back for scores against Farrington and also served as the team's primary placekicker. He was recognized as both the All-Oahu Interscholastic Association and All-Hawaii Open Division Offensive Player of the Year. Carvalho is the first student-athlete from Kahuku to receive the Pizza Hut Newcomer Award, which has been given out annually since 2014.

Female Newcomer of the Year: Jaety Mandaquit, Iolani basketball

The sophomore made a splash in her very first varsity basketball season last winter. Mandaquit opened eyes with her 19-point performance against Centennial (Las Vegas) on the final day of the Iolani Girls Classic back in December. The 5-foot-6 guard went on to average 10.4 points per game over the course of the year and earned first team All-Interscholastic League of Honolulu honors. She helped the Raiders compile a 15-2 overall record, including their third consecutive ILH and state championships. Mandaquit picked up all-tournament team recognition at states and later was tabbed as an All-Hawaii First Team selection. She is the third student-athlete from Iolani to win the Pizza Hut Female Newcomer Award, joining past awardees Elena Oglivie (2017) and Ailana Agbayani (2019).
