Governors pull away from Chargers in straight sets

Farrington got all it could handle from visiting Pearl City in the opening round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I playoffs Wednesday night.

The Governors held off a scrappy Chargers team in a 25-22, 25-20, 25-13 victory to advance to Monday's quarterfinal where they will take on Mililani, the second-seeded team from the West.

Aleejah Sunia put down 11 kills and Jorja Williams added eight more to lead Farrington (9-2), who also totaled 13 aces in the contest.

Pearl City (3-8) was competitive in a back-and-forth opening set and held a 22-19 lead before a Farrington timeout. However, five straight hitting errors by the Chargers followed by a bump set by libero Lia Aiwohi to Sunia ended the set in the Governors' favor.

It was only in the third set when Farrington started to establish its dominance. A 10-2 run to start the frame that included back-to-back aces by Mila Aiwohi and Alyssa Kamealoha paved the way for the Governors to win the third set by double digits.

Sierra Long had eight kills, three blocks and two aces to lead the Chargers in the loss.
