EWA BEACH — Chayne Kuboyama-Hayashi passed for 328 yards and three touchdowns to three different receivers to help No. 7 Campbell open with a 38-6 win over eighth-ranked Farrington Friday night.

The Sabers (1-0) built a 32-0 lead by the eight-minute mark of the third quarter and were never threatened by the visiting Governors (0-1), who were limited to only 51 yards of total offense in defeat.

Campbell finished with 467 total yards, including 367 through the air. Kuboyama-Hayashi, a sophomore and first-year starting quarterback, completed 14 of his 19 pass attempts, but was responsible for four of his team's five turnovers — including three interceptions and a lost fumble.

"There's a lot of work to be done," Sabers coach Darren Johnson said. "There were some mistakes, but we understand that we gotta patch it up and do it again."

Campbell's defense was up to the task, however. It held Farrington to just eight total first downs — none of them via the pass — and 3 of 14 on third-down conversions.

Despite the five turnovers from their offense, the Sabers only allowed a single touchdown defensively — which came four plays after a Kuboyama-Hayashi fumble inside his own 10-yard line.

"We want to address the ball security and make sure that we don't let the little things get away from us. Our defense played outstanding tonight and we're lucky that we played good defense and our defense could play with these big boys," Johnson said.

Campbell tallied five sacks against the Farrington offensive line, two of them by defensive back Kana Nelson. Linebacker Tysic Puni also had a sack and recovered a fumble for the Sabers' lone takeaway of the game.

"Our defense played good shutout football. We basically gave Farrington the ball and they scored, but you know, that was an offensive giveaway and our defense's back was against the wall, but they did good down there and they played good defense," Johnson said.

Campbell opened the scoring less than two minutes into the contest, thanks to busted coverage by the Govs' secondary. On just the third play from scrimmage, wide receiver Jourdain Berinobis-Pyne got wide open along the right sideline, where Kuboyama-Hayashi found him with a pass that he turned into a 70-yard scoring play.

The Sabers turned it over on their next two possessions, but their defense denied Farrington both times.

Kuboyama-Hayashi stepped up in the pocket to deliver a 29-yard scoring strike to Kamaehu Kopa-Kaawalauole to cap a nine-play, 70-yard drive with 8:09 left in the first half.

Farrington put together a 10-play drive on its ensuing possession that penetrated inside of the Sabers' 40-yard line, but Campbell recorded sacks on three straight plays to eventually force a punt. On the very next play, however, Kuboyama-Hayashi fired a deep ball for Diego Betancourt, who made a leaping reception of the pass before fending off a defensive back on the 89-yard touchdown play.

Chauncee Lopez ran in the two-point conversion to give Campbell a 20-0 lead with 1:52 remaining in the second quarter.

The Sabers added a pair of scores on short touchdown runs early in the third quarter. Lopez scooted into the end zone from two yards out after Campbell started its first possession after halftime at the Govs' 24-yard line.

Then, after Farrington muffed the ensuing kickoff return, the Sabers recovered and started their next drive from the Farrington 32. Kuboyama-Hayashi completed a 31-yard pass tom Kopa-Kaawalauole to set-up a 1-yard TD run by Zechariah Alualu-Tuiolemotu that made it a 32-0 cushion for the home team.

Farrington's only points were a result of a 1-yard TD run by Johnathan Gutierrez Ioramo with 2:39 left in the third quarter.

Campbell closed out the scoring with a Lopez 5-yard TD run with 4:04 to play.

The Sabers came across just six third downs on offense and converted on half of them. They racked up 21 first downs (11 by rush, 10 by pass, 1 by penalty) despite 10 penalties for 90 yards.

Farrington was flagged nine times for 62 yards. It was held to 38 yards rushing on 33 attempts.

Mikaele Ptele, Micah Ito and Jason Felipe each recorded an interception and Syracuse Kahakai and Blaze Ganotise each recovered a fumble in the loss.

Kopa-Kaawalauole finished with three receptions for a game-high 108 yards, Berinobis-Pyne posted four grabs for 92 yards and Kama Espinda added five catches for 52 yards.

Lopez carried 13 times for 65 yards and two touchdowns. Campbell ran the ball as a team 28 times for 100 yards.

"It feels really nice," Johnson said of the victory. "I think everybody was happy to play. I know that we hoped that things went good, injuries were good, you know, kids were cramping, but that's expected when you wait so long and it's just happy to have a game and even happier when you get a win."

Campbell has a bye next before it hosts Waianae (0-1) on Oct. 29.

Farrington will host Kahuku (1-0) on Oct. 23 at Edward ‘Skippa' Diaz Stadium.
