Sagapolutele throws 6 TDs, Crusaders use 35-point second half to down Warriors

Jaron Sagapolutele passed for 453 yards and six touchdowns and Saint Louis II held off Kamehameha II in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu football game at Aloha Stadium Friday night.

The Crusaders (2-1) posted 579 yards of total offense and scored 35 second-half points, including a string of 21 straight in the fourth, to rebound from a 24-point loss to Iolani a week prior.

Sagapolutele, a 6-foot-3 freshman quarterback, completed 30 of his 44 pass attempts without an interception. He found wide receiver Onosai Salanoa 13 times for 262 yards, including three touchdowns; the pair hooked up on TD passes of 33, 52 and 37 yards.

Kache Kaio recorded eight receptions for 81 yards and two scores and Chevas Gregory Jr. ran for 102 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries in the win.

Kamehameha tied the score at 27 on Moe Passi's 30-yard touchdown run and took a slim lead on Kane Tubania's ensuing extra point early in the fourth quarter. However, Saint Louis answered with a six-play, 74-yard drive that culminated with a 25-yard scoring strike from Sagapolutele to Aizek Kaanoi to give their lead a 34-28 lead with 9:28 to play.

The Crusaders made it a two-score game with Sagapolutele's 23-yard TD pass to Kaio on fourth-and-13 and took their largest lead at 48-28 on a 37-yard Sagapolutele-to-Salanoa score through the air with 3:06 remaining.

Kamehameha cut it to a one-score deficit with a Nazaiah Caravallo 15-yard TD pass to Kaimana Bradley with 1:08 left, but Saint Louis recovered the ensuing onside kick and took two kneel-downs to run out the clock.

The Warriors (1-3) posted 348 yards of total offense, including 279 passing. Starter Noah Spencer finished 14-of-23 passing for 221 yards. His 41-yard touchdown pass to Bradley opened the scoring with 5:15 left in the first quarter. The same pair connected on a 3-yard scoring strike at the 7:54 mark of the second quarter and answered back-to-back touchdown drives by the Crusaders.

Rusten Abang-Perez caught 10 passes for 177 yards and an 80-yard TD from Spencer that evened the score at 21-all with 2:49 until the fourth.

The game was tied at 14 at the half.

Saint Louis was penalized 16 times for 142 yards.

The Crusaders got 10 tackles for loss from its defense. They play next against PAC-5 on Friday, before they close out the season against the Warriors in a rematch on Oct. 22.
