Big first half helps No. 12 Iolani rout PAC-5

HALAWA—No. 12 Iolani scored early and often to rout PAC-5, 47-0, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu game at Aloha Stadium Friday night.

The Raiders put up 305 yards of total offense and its defense forced three interceptions and held the Wolfpack (0-3 overall) to 31 yards of total offense to improve to 4-0 overall for the first time since 2012.

After PAC-5 went three-and-out on their opening offensive drive, Iolani responded with an eight-play, 59-yard drive that resulted in Brody Bantolina's 1-yard touchdown run. Bantolina scored his eighth touchdown of the season and finished with 11 carries for 93 yards in one half of work.

Iolani's defense forced another Wolfpack punt and Stirling Sakashita took it 58 yards to the house and Allison Chang's kick made it 14-0 with 5:53 left in the first quarter.

Nikolas Yim led a swarm of Raiders to drop Chad Schmidt inside the end zone for a safety.

Iolani erupted for 24 points in the second quarter that triggered running clock in the second half. Keao Miyahira rushed for a 1-yard touchdown and Chang (6 for 6 on PATs) added a 31-yard field goal in the second quarter to make it, 26-0.

Sakashita picked off Ezekiel Rodrigues and returned it to the PAC-5 4-yard line that set up Miyahira's second rushing touchdown for a 33-0 lead.

Nela Taliauli led all Iolani receivers with 52 yards and hauled in a 11-yard touchdown pass from Micah Hoomanawanui five seconds before halftime. Hoomanawanui threw for 111 yards on 8-of-18 passing and no interceptions.

Cainen Torres rushed for 65 yards and had a 34-yard gain that set up Hyrum Horita's sweep from Kualau Manuel for 2 yards into the end zone for the final score of the night late in the fourth quarter.

Asher Matsui led the Raider defense with 10 tackles, 4 1/2 went for losses and had one of the defense's three interceptions.

Schmidt rushed for a team-high 31 yards and added 4 1/2 tackles on defense and Daymian Lapitan led the Wolfpack defense with eight tackles.

Iolani won first meeting, 46-7 back on Sept. 3.

The Raiders were penalized nine times for 94 yards while the Wolfpack committed two penalties for 10 yards.

Iolani hosts Damien (2-2 overall) on Sept. 24 while the Wolfpack face Kamehameha II (0-2 overall) in the first game of an Aloha Stadium doubleheader.
