Modified start-date calendar approved by HHSAA board

The Hawaii High School Athletic Association executive board on Friday unanimously voted in approval of a modified calendar that includes state tournaments for every sport.

Friday's news from the HHSAA follows last week's announcement by state Department of Education interim superintendent Keith Hayashi that requires that all public school student-athletes to undergo regular testing if they are not fully vaccinated by Sept. 24.

"It is a testament to our members to be able to agree to a calendar on such short notice," HHSAA Executive Director Chris Chun said in the press release.

"Furthermore, this calendar preserves league and state championships, which gives student-athletes something that has been missing since February 2020. It shows the Department of Education, Department of Health and our state and county leaders that there is a plan in place once all schools can resume (extracirricular activities) on September 24th," Chun added.

The start date for all fall sports will be Sept. 27, with the state tournaments for girls volleyball, cross country, air riflery and bowling scheduled for the week of Dec. 6-10. The cheerleading state championships are slated for the following week, Dec. 13-19, while the fall season will conclude with the state football tournaments on the weekends of Dec. 31-Jan. 1 and Jan. 7-8.

The HHSAA member leagues include the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, Interscholastic League of Honolulu, Kauai Interscholastic Federation, Maui Interscholastic League and the Oahu Interscholastic Association.
