Ewa Beach native and Saint Louis '17 graduate Tua Tagovailoa was selected No. 5 overall by the Miami Dolphins in Thursday's 2020 National Football League Draft.

After suffering a season-ending hip injury last fall, the former University of Alabama quarterback announced at the beginning of the new year he would forego his senior season to declare for the NFL Draft. Tagovailoa ended his collegiate career holding several NCAA records including highest career passing efficiency rating and most passing yards per attempt.

Tagovailoa will reportedly sign a four-year contract worth $30.2 million along with a $19.5 million signing bonus.

The 2016 All-Hawaii Division I Offensive Player of the Year helped engineer Saint Louis' 18th state championship run and was rated a four-star recruit out of high school. He first broke out on the national stage as a true freshman after helping Alabama to a come-from-behind victory in the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship game with a 41-yard touchdown pass in overtime.

Other quarterbacks currently listed on Miami's roster include incumbent starter and 15-year veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick, 2018 10th overall pick Josh Rosen and Jake Rudock.

Rosen was the starting quarterback of the St. John Bosco team that defeated Saint Louis at Aloha Stadium in 2014. Tagovailoa was a sophomore at the time and saw action in the second half of the game.

Tagovailoa joins Super Bowl LII champion Kamu Grugier-Hill (Kamehameha '12), who was drafted by the New England Patriots in 2016 and spent four seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles before recently signing a one-year deal with the Dolphins.
