ALA WAI—Mid-Pacific led big after the second inning and pulled away with three runs in the final two innings to defeat Iolani, 10-7, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I at the Raider's field on a blustery Saturday morning.

Catcher Kaeolani Takemura and right fielder Samantha Taga combined to blast four of the team's six home runs for the game as the Owls improve to 1-1 in ILH play.

Darian Kanno picked up the win after scattering nine hits, walking four and striking out four as Mid-Pacific rebounded from a tough loss to Maryknoll three days earlier.

Iolani (1-1) drew first blood on the scoreboard after Ailana Agbayani's run in the first inning.

The wind seem to affect both teams.

"It definitely was, especially with the pop flies you don't know where it's going so you have to get under it and can't drift because it's going to go away from you," Kanno said.

Kanno, who hit fourth following Takemura, led off the second inning with a home run. Allie Capello consecutively walked Marissa Nishihara and Alyssa Nakagawa before Zoe Oshiro scored with a three RBI shot to right field. Taga sent her first homer over centerfield and Ava Puuohau drew a walk before Capello was lifted for Agbayani in the circle.

"I thought it got the ball rolling," Kanno said of the lead off home run. "In that inning, one hit can change and shift the momentum."

"She definitely had to keep us going. She started us up and everyone felt the energy and kept going," Takemura said.

Agbayani got Mahea Perkins to pop out to short and Jenna Wong to pop out to third, but Takemura blasted her first home run to center right as Mid-Pacific led, 7-1.

The Raiders responded with three runs of their own as Maya Ichimura drew a lead off walk then advanced on a wild pitch. After two outs, Agbayani walked that set up Capello's three RBI home run over the right field fence as the Raiders trailed, 7-4.

Iolani kept Mid-Pacific off the scoreboard in the third and chipped away for two runs in the bottom of the inning. Taylor Kai doubled on a 2-2 count that snuck inside the foul line and Kaylee Matsuda brought her in with a triple. Ichimura scored Matsuda on a sacrifice bunt as the Raiders were within a run.

Harley Acosta led off the bottom of the fifth with a single then moved over on Rylie Wada's sac bunt then to third off Kai. Matsuda brought in her second run with a single to right as Iolani tied the game at 7.

"I told myself when I get a little rattled, I guess, I tell myself, ‘Deep breaths, you're fine and trust the defense.' We work hard in practice and they have my back," Kanno said.

Wong drew a walk in the top of the sixth then Takemura crushed her second home run over centerfield to put the Owls up 9-7. Taga led off the top of the seventh with a solo home run for the final run of the game.

"We had our momentum going and Jenna had to get on base and she kept it going. All I had was move it over and it happened. I saw a fast ball inside and I was looking and it was there and I swang," Takemura said of the go-ahead home run.

Kanno got Capello to pop out to second but Acosta hit a single to left, but Nishihara got the final two outs to help seal the win for the Owls.

"I felt confident in my team because I knew they had my back and I could trust them. Even when I was pitching and they hit the ball, my defense would have my back and get the out for me," Kanno said.

"We had to keep playing how we usually play and we knew we had them," Takemura said of the final inning.

Agbayani went 2 for 3 for two runs, pitched six innings to scatter six hits, walked six and struck out eight in the loss.

Mid-Pacific hosts Sacred Hearts on Mar. 11 while Iolani goes to Kamehameha on the same afternoon.
