Mustangs win shootout to knock off Raiders

Kalaheo keeper Braden Uehara stopped the final penalty kick attempt by host Iolani as the Mustangs advanced over the Raiders in the opening round of the Queen's Medical Center Division I Boys Soccer Championships Monday afternoon.
After 100 minutes of scoreless play, Kalaheo edged Iolani, 4-3, in the shootout period to move on to face third-seeded Waiakea Thursday in a 3 p.m. quarterfinal match at the main stadium of the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.
Uehara had a chance at another save earlier in the shootout period when he got two hands on Jonah Kawamura's shot attempt, but Kawamura's shot attempt powered through as both teams converted on their first two attempts.
Iolani, last year's state runner-up, had an opportunity to take the advantage when keeper Isaak Tanaka stopped Kalaheo's Alex Braswell on the Mustangs' third shot attempt, but Jaxson Kahawai's shot sailed wide left to keep the score at 2-2 after three shooters.
Tanaka appeared to come up big on the Mustangs' next shot attempt when he stopped Jack Bright, but the official said he left the line early and they had to redo the shot. Bright converted on the play.
Jacob Lee tied it for Iolani as the Raiders' fourth shooter and Jack Lemonds found the right corner to give Kalaheo the go-ahead PK before Uehara stopped Jack Brady on the final shot attempt.
The Raiders definitely had their chances before the shootout, and were the aggressors in the second overtime period. However, timely stops by Uehara and centerback Kainoa Ferguson helped the Mustangs stay alive.
