Waimea, University Lab reach D2 semifinals

KALIHI — Second-seeded Waimea outdueled Hawaii Prep in five sets and University Lab overpowered third seed Pearl City in straight sets to advance to the New City Nissan Girls Volleyball Division II State Championships semifinals where the Menehunes and Junior Bows will meet up with a chance to take on the winner of Damien-Seabury Hall Saturday evening for the koa trophy.

On the other side of the bracket Thursday evening at Kaimuki High School, Seabury Hall outlasted McKinley in five sets while Damien cruised to a sweep of Kalani.

Waimea and University Lab will get Friday's semifinal doubleheader at Kaimuki High School started with first serve set for 5 p.m. followed by the Monarchs and Spartans.

A year ago, both Waimea and Damien were eliminated in the semifinal round.

Schools from the Interscholastic League of Honolulu have won each of the last four Division II state championships with the league claiming 11 of the 14 overall titles since the D2 tournament began in 2005.

This season's state final is set for Saturday, 5 p.m. at the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena.
