Pearl City ends season on high note

PEARL CITY - In the final regular season game, the Pearl City Chargers defeated the Waialua Bulldogs in overtime, 29-26, on Saturday night at Edwin Bino Neves Stadium. 

Senior quarterback Makanaokalani Canyon threw for 241 yard and had four touchdowns to three different receivers on 19-for-34 passing to help the Chargers (3-7) snap a five-game losing streak.

At the half both teams were tied at 13 apiece. Both teams scored 10 points in the second half and ended the regulation period tied at 23-23.  

Waialua received the ball to start the overtime period and Kade Mahuka knocked in a 40-yard field goal to take the lead 26-23. Pearl City got the ball back on the 20 yard line and Canyon found wide receiver Joshua Gleason for an 8-yard score to give the Chargers the walk-off victory.

The win also propelled sixth-year Pearl City coach Robin Kami to his 40th year, making him the winningest coach of the program.

To lead the Bulldogs (5-5) in the loss was Kyler Dicion, who threw for three touchdowns and had three tackles. 

The Chargers' season is over while Waialua will face top-seeded Roosevelt in the playoffs next Saturday.
