Crusaders extend win streak to 35

Quarterback Jayden de Laura passed for 381 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 1 Saint Louis over Waianae, 56-26, Friday night at Raymond Torii Field.

The Crusaders (9-0), who are ranked seventh nationally by MaxPreps, extended their win streak to 35 games dating to 2016. The Seariders (1-8) dropped their eighth in a row to end their season on senior night.

De Laura inflicted the bulk of his damage on Waianae in the first half, when he had 322 yards and four TDs. He completed 2 of 2 passes for 59 yards to start the second before giving way to Connor Apo, who was followed by Jaiton Kamaunu. De Laura had a season-high 27 completions from 36 attempts. He threw TD passes of 9 and 25 yards to Matthew Sykes, as well as a 19-yarder to Roman Wilson and 6-yarders to Koali Nishigaya, who led all receivers with nine catches for 132 yards.

Running back Mason Taliulu had TD runs of 1 and 11 yards for the Crusaders. Kaohu Kamakawiwoole also had a 6-yard TD run. Saint Louis' other TD came on a 51-yard fumble return by Pookela Louis.

In the third period, the Crusaders set off the running clock after Kamakawiwoole's 6-yard TD run that increased Saint Louis' lead to 56-19. But stubborn Waianae stopped the running clock with 22 seconds left in the third when Kali-English connected with Kaai Tamboan-Kaeo on an 11-yard TD pass.

While Waianae's season has ended, Saint Louis will have to wait until Nov. 1 to play the winner of Kamehameha-Punahou set for Oct. 25 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Open tournament.
