Mililani capitalizes on Kamehameha miscues

HALAWA — Much like the weather, this game was a tale of two opposites.

No. 2 Mililani stayed steady and scored in each quarter as it shut out No. 6 Kamehameha, 34-0, Saturday evening in the middle game of an Oahu Interscholastic Association-Interscholastic League of Honolulu Open Division triple header at Hawaiian Financial FCU Field at Aloha Stadium.

It was a humid afternoon at the start of the contest before a slew of downpours rained down and throughout Halawa as both teams combined to trade nine total turnovers.

Still, the Trojans were able to prevail and posted 332 yards of total offense with quarterback Brendyn Agbayani Jr. hooking up with receiver Kanoa Gibson for two touchdowns while running back Malosi Sam added two scores on the ground.

Mililani's defense had five takeaways and limited Kamehameha to just 104 yards of offense with minus-15 on the ground due in part to 15 tackles for loss. Eleven of Kamehameha's 16 offensive possessions went three plays or less (excluding punts on fourth down), including the Warriors first seven drives.

With Mililani leading 14-0 in the second quarter, the Trojans turned the ball over three consecutive times on two muffed punts and one interception, but the Warriors went three and out, missed a field goal attempt and threw an interception to squander any scoring opportunity.

The Warriors had their best chances for points late in the fourth quarter when quarterback Kiai Keone hit Blaze Kamoku for 25 yards at the Mililani 7 yard line before Trojans defender Jarin Kalama popped the ball out from behind for Kamalu Deblake to recover it in the end zone for a touchback.

After getting the ball back at the Mililani 40 yard line with 3:22 left in the game, Kamehameha drove down to the 1 yard line for first and goal, but a mishandled snap caused the ball to scuttle quietly out from beneath the scrum for Mililani defensive back Vaisen Viloria to scoop and scat for a 99-yard score.

It was the first time this season Kamehameha had been kept off the scoreboard while it was the third time Mililani pitched a shutout after blanking Kahuku and Farrington earlier in the season.

Kamehameha (0-4) will be back in action next Saturday with a trip across the H-1 to take on Farrington (1-2) while Mililani (4-0) will close out the Hawaii versus out-of-state competition slate by hosting national power St. John Bosco (Bellflower California).
