Hurricanes hang on to down Downey

KAPOLEI — After a slow start from both teams, Kapolei jumped out to an 18-point lead before Downey (California) stormed back with 22 fourth-quarter points, but the Hurricanes held on for the win, 31-28, Friday evening in a non-league out-of-state matchup.

Kapolei receiver De'Zhaun Stribling was limited in the Hurricanes' past two games against Saint Louis and Punahou, but the state's current leading receiver bounced back and added a career-high 178 receiving yards off 10 receptions with one touchdown. His 11-yard score near the top of the second quarter got the scoring started in the game, after both teams started with slow with Kapolei turning the ball over on its first three possessions.

Both quarterbacks Noa Bailey (Kapolei) and Pedro De Anda (Downey) tossed three picks a piece, but Bailey finished with two TD passes while De Anda threw three of his four in the final period.

After Saturday night, Hawaii teams now has a combined 5-4 record against out-of-state competition this season. There are six remaining games in the season between a Hawaii school and an out-of-state opponent.

Last season, Kapolei took the trip up to California where it also defeated the Vikings by a score of 23-14 last August.

The Hurricanes (3-2 overall) will return to Oahu Interscholastic Association league play next Friday against Farrington (0-4).
