Hoekstra sparks Waialua over Vincent Massey

WAIALUA — In a non-league matchup, Waialua took on Vincent Massey Collegiate of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Friday afternoon at Toshiyuki Nakasone Field. The Bulldogs were successful and got the win 43-27.

The first quarter of play for both teams went scoreless. The Bulldogs and Trojans exchanged interceptions in the end zone which resulted in touchbacks. The last play of the first quarter ended in a 50-yard run by Georges Carama who set up first-and-10 at the 25-yard line for Vincent Massey.  

Vincent Massey receiver Riley Ho scored the first touchdown of the night from 25 yards out on the first play of the second quarter which came from quarterback Jordan Hanslip.  

Waialua had a number of key offensive players out for Friday's game, but that did not stop the Bulldogs from moving the ball. Waialua scored twice in the first half and twice again in each quarter of the second half. Dicion, who is the back-up quarterback for Waialua, completed 18 of his 30 pass attempts for 271 yards and accounted for five TDs.

Waialua scored late in the second quarter with 1:52 left when Dicion hit Justin "Kamu" Lorenzo with a 20-yard TD pass. Kade Mahuka added on the PAT to tie things up at 7. To end the second quarter, Dicion found receiver Kai Hoekstra from 32 yards out to take the lead 14-7 against the Trojans.  

Hoekstra was off the charts for Friday's game. He had an interception in the end zone for the Bulldogs in the first quarter which resulted in a touchback. He had another interception in the first quarter and ran it in for a pick-6, but it was called back because of a penalty. Hoekstra also scored twice in the third quarter, a 4-yard reception with a 2-point conversion, and a 55-yard reception to give Waialua a 29-7 lead.

The last score in the third quarter went to Vincent Massey. Kaiden Bannon caught a 15-yard pass from Hanslip, however the PAT was no good. The score at the end of the third quarter was 29-13.

In the final stanza, the Bulldogs scored again when Dicion ran into the end zone for a 1-yard run. Blitzen "Mana" Benz scored a 70-yard TD run to close out the scoring for the Bulldogs.

Vincent Massey scored with 2:55 left in regulation when Hanslip threw a 10-yard pass to Trey White who ran into the end zone. The Trojans attempted the 2-point conversion and were successful. The last play of regulation was a TD pass, from Hanslip to White from five yards out.  

Yaron Mirkin lead the way for Vincent Massey on defense with five tackles.

Waialua will have another home game next week Saturday when they host the Kaimuki Bulldogs.
