Edison shuts down Baldwin in season opener

WAILUKU, Maui — Visiting Edison (Huntington Beach, Calif.) looked like a team in midseason form Friday night.

The Chargers dominated the Bears, 52-0, in both teams' season opener at War Memorial Stadium in a contest that saw the victors outgain their opponent, 421 to 57.

Edison also did not allow a single first down to Baldwin and held the Bears to minus-10 yards in the opening half of play.

After their opening drive got derailed by penalties, the Chargers got good field position after Jack Kosick blocked a punt by Baldwin's Justin Rivera. This set up a 9-yard touchdown run by Mike Walters, a 6-foot-1, 215-pound senior. Walters added another score on Edison's next drive with a 12-yard scamper to make it 14-0 with 5:25 remaining in the first quarter.

Edison quarterback Braeden Boyles capped the scoring in the opening period with a 48-yard pass to Ethan Ton.

Baldwin's defense did a better job in the second quarter, but gave up a fourth-down TD pass from Boyles to Ryan Rivituso that was good from 18 yards out. Kosick picked off Baldwin QB Laa Asuega-Stark on the following drive that set up an 8-yard TD run by Tanner Nelson to give the Chargers a 35-0 lead with 2:46 to play in the first half.

The final score before the break came on a 36-yard strike from Jacob Hanlon to Cole Koffler to make it a 42-0 game at the break.

Troy Fletcher, who was a perfect 7-for-7 on PATs, added a 91-yard interception return and a 18-yard field goal in the second half for Edison's other points.
