First win for Waialua since 2016 title game

WAIALUA — 2019 is off to a good start for the Bulldogs as they took down Nanakuli, 31-7, Saturday evening in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II matchup at Waialua High School.

Senior quarterback Justyce Lacar completed 70.4 percent of his passes to finish with 209 yards and four touchdowns. Three of those passes went to junior Kai Hoekstra, who found paydirt on all three receptions and finished with 56 yards.

The Golden Hawks nearly matched the Bulldogs in total offense with 274 yards to Waialua's 295, but Nanakuli turned the ball over three times which included a 22-yard pick-six from Titus Fuiava to get the scoring started in the first quarter.

Saturday marked the first time Waialua walked off the field on the winning side of the scoreboard since Oct. 28, 2016, when the Bulldogs claimed their first OIA Division II championship in 61 years.

Officially, Waialua did record a win last season via forfeit. Saint Francis blanked the Bulldogs 69-0, but the Saints later had to forfeit all but one of their games due to the use of an ineligible player.

Also helping in Saturday's winning effort was Storm Quilenderino, who led the way on the ground going for 97 yards on only nine carries while notching six tackles and three sacks on the other side of the ball.

It was Nanakuli's first game back in the OIA's Division II after winning only one game while competing in Division I the past three seasons.

Waialua (1-0) will return home next Friday to take on defending league champ Roosevelt (1-0) while Nanakuli (0-1, 1-1 overall) hosts Kalani (1-0, 2-0 overall) that same night.
