Govs stay steady against Saints; HBA next

KALIHI — Farrington got support from its bench as the Governors stayed steady to move past Saint Francis, 41-35, Wednesday evening in the opening round of the Snapple/HHSAA Division II Girls Basketball State Championships at Damien Memorial School.

Senior Shayla Cabato-Machado (8 points) and sophomores Shaylen Tatupu-Timu (8 points), Matalasi Sevao (4 points) and Falesefulu Kahaleua-Sagote (4 points) combined for 24 points off the bench, outscoring the Governors' starters by seven.

Cabato-Machado, Tatupu-Timu and MJ Lorraine Peralta each nabbed six boards to share the team-high. Setita Prescott also shared a team-high with eight points.

Farrington outscored Saint Francis in each of the first three quarters to take a healthy nine-point lead into the final quarter.

Saints senior Kaitlyn Kalani put up a game-high 12 points with 11 rebounds. Junior Julianne Johnson also had 11 boards and Rebeca Ziegler following with nine.

The Govs advance to take on Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Hawaii Baptist, Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. back at Damien. The winner will play the victor of Hawaii Prep and Waimea, which will precede tip-off starting at 5:30 p.m.

Earlier in the day, Saint Francis will play Waipahu at 3:30 p.m. in a consolation game. The Saints finished as last year's state runner-up.
