HPA continues reign in Division II girls soccer

WAIPAHU — The dynasty continues.

Hawaii Prep won its sixth straight state title with a 4-0 beatdown of Kamehameha-Hawaii Saturday night in The Queen's Medical Center/HHSAA Division II Girls Soccer Championship at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Sophomore defender Malia Brost netted a hat trick before halftime to power Ka Makani in their second straight win over the Warriors in the state final.

"We did some really good stuff," said HPA coach Steve Perry. "We controlled the middle of the field. Malia and Jenna (Perry) were a force this whole weekend. They love playing together and they love working with each other. That's really where everything starts for us. The girls are playing their best soccer right now."

All four of HPA's goals came in the first half of play. In the 9th minute, Ka Makani won a freekick from about 35 yards out. Brost hit a lofted ball that dipped below the cross bar and into the top left corner of goal. This was the first goal of many for Brost on the night.

After Angela Cipriano scored off an Emi Higgins cross in the 34th minute, Brost would find the back of the net two more times. Cipriano won a free kick by the right corner flag in the 39th minute and Brost hit her free kick into the top left corner again over the outstretched goalkeeper. Brost scored again right before the halftime whistle when she played a one two ball with Cipriano off a corner kick and found the top left corner again.

"I've never scored (three) goals like this so it's a really good feeling," said Brost. "My head coach (Vincent) would have me do shooting drills and stuff like that. I constantly worked on it."

Brost finishes the season as Ka Makani's second leading goal scorer with 17 goals (one behind teammate Cipriano with 18).

"She (Malia) had a perfect half," said Perry. "She's a weapon with that left foot and probably one of the best lefties I've ever had. She hit three good balls that were well positioned."
