Hagiwara's hat trick powers Warriors to semis

WAIPAHU — Maya Hagiwara scored three times within 13 minutes in the second half to power top-seeded Kamehameha past Mililani, 3-0, in Thursday's nightcap of The Queen's Medical Center/HHSAA Division I State Championships quarterfinal round at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex Main Stadium.

Kamehameha — also the No. 1 ranked team in the Hawaiian Electric/ScoringLive Soccer Power Rankings — will play fourth-seeded Kekaulike Friday night at 7 p.m. Na Alii is coming off a 4-2 penalty kick victory over Pearl City.

Before the match kicked off between the Warriors and Trojans, Thursday's Division I state quarterfinals quadrupleheader had already seen a crazy slate of games with two being decided in penalty kicks while the other saw Campbell upset second-seeded Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Aiea.

After a scoreless first half, Kamehameha and Mililani seemed to be headed toward another epic finish of the day.

But junior Maya Hagiwara scored her first three goals of the season as the Warriors ran away with the victory. Listed as a midfielder on the roster, Hagiwara got the start in the front line against Mililani. She notched goals in the 47th, 52nd and 60th minute. D'awncey Jones-Black and Anuhea Aluli assisted on two of the scores.

Mililani's chase for the championship ended with the loss. It will play Pearl City at 3 p.m. with the winner getting a chance to play for fifth place against the winner of Aiea and Iolani. Thursday night was the second time the Trojans had been shut out this season.

Kamehameha last won a state championship in 2014.
