Ogata, Roosevelt race by McKinley

MAKIKI — Roosevelt quarterback Sky Ogata knows better than anyone that when his offense finds a groove, it is hard to stop. On Friday night at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium, McKinley was the latest team to find that out firsthand.

The junior quarterback threw for 205 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 97 yards and another score as Roosevelt raced past McKinley, 39-6, on homecoming night.

"Once I got in my rhythm, everything kept clicking," said Sky Ogata. "The coaches helped me with the play calls and making reads."

One of the beneficiaries of the offense's success was Sky's older brother, Nicholas Ogata, a senior who not only got to celebrate his final homecoming game, but also a touchdown hookup from his brother — a six-yard hookup with 6:08 remaining in the game that gave Roosevelt a 32-6 lead.

"It was supposed to be a five-yard hitch, but (Sky) scrambled out, so I got out and caught the pass," said the older Ogata, who caught four catches for 57 yards.

Roosevelt (7-1, 4-1 OIA) didn't start well offensively, gaining just 20 yards in its first two series. The Rough Riders finally sustained a long drive early in the second quarter but faced a fourth-down play at the McKinley 30 yard line. After using a timeout, Sky Ogata found Isaac Kaleikau streaking down the right side of the field for the game's first touchdown.

On its next drive, Roosevelt marched down the field on a 14-play, 58-yard drive. Mitchel Camacho extended the drive by gaining a yard on a key fourth-and-one play at the Tigers 14 yard line. Four plays later, Sky Ogata set-up a perfectly executed screen pass to Aalona Monteilh, who took it 19 yards to the end zone with 1:19 remaining in the half.

Roosevelt would score on its first two drives of the third quarter. Mason Morishige booted a 23-yard field goal to extend the Rough Riders' lead to 17-0.

After McKinley scored on the following possession, Sky Ogata flashed his speed. After completing a pair of passes, he raced through a pair of defenders into the open field for a 53-yard run. On the next play, he slipped off of a tackle at the line of scrimmage and ran into the end zone for a 16-yard score. Extending the lead to 24-6 with mere seconds remaining in the third quarter.
