KALIHI — It's a big boys' game.

No. 11 Farrington outmuscled No. 8 Kapolei for a 13-0 homecoming win Saturday night in an OIA Open Division contest at Edward ‘Skippa' Diaz Stadium at Henry Kusunoki Field.

The Governors snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory as they improved to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in league play.

"We were tired of losing," senior center Saleula Collins said of the win. "Today really showed that hard work and hustling pays off."

Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez, who's team was shutout for the first time since a season-ending loss in 2014, said Farrington won the game in the trenches.

"Credit to them, they took it to us on both sides of the line," Hernandez said. "Their O-line was great, their D-line was great. They were very physical."

Offensively the Governors were methodical in their approach. Chris Afe-Alaivanu completed 8 of 15 passes for 114 yards and the rest of the offense churned out 119 yards on the ground behind Samsen Tanuvasa's season-high 89 yards rushing on 25 carries.

On the other side of the ball, Kapolei (3-3 overall, 1-1 league) never got in sync against the Farrington defense. Three Kapolei quarterbacks combined for 10-for-34 passing for just 156 yards and the Hurricanes were tackled behind the line of scrimmage nine times, five of which came on sacks.

Spearheading the defensive effort for the Governors was senior defensive lineman Justus Rogers-Makainai, who had three sacks and two forced fumbles, including the game-ending strip sack.

What was more impressive was Rogers-Makainai did it while nursing a leg injury.

"He actually got hurt this week so we weren't sure if Justus was even going to play," first-year Farrington Daniel Sanchez said. "We focused a lot on getting him healthy, and we did. He did a tremendous job. He got in there and made the plays."

Farrington got on the board late in the first quarter after the defense forced the Hurricanes into a fourth-and-19 situation at their own 11.

The Governors capitalized on the good field position and scored on Afe-Alaivanu's 36-yard touchdown pass to Selau Kalani. The senior QB rolled right and shook off a couple of tackles before finding Kalani streaking across the back of the end zone. The snap was bad on the PAT attempt to leave the score at 6-0 with 3:16 to play in the first quarter.

Kapolei reached the the Farrington 17 on the following possession, but turned it over on downs after three straight incompletions by starting QB Noa Bailey.

Farrington had to punt on its first drive of the first half, but got the ball right back when Calijah Mareko picked off Bailey deep inside Kapolei territory. This set up a Tanuvasa's 4-yard TD run for the final score of the game.

Christian Rapis and Mason Gomez also got reps behind center for the Hurricanes, but neither found much success either.

"Their defense was outstanding," said Hernandez, who's team lost its third straight game to the Governors. "We were really off tonight, our passing game, we just couldn't connect.

"It wasn't just us, it was their defense. Their defense stepped up. They were well prepared. All credit to Farrington, they did a great job."
