Athlete of the Week: Hugh Brady, Punahou football
After taking it to the chin in the season opener, Hugh Brady and the Punahou football team got a little bit of redemption last week.
Brady, a junior quarterback, threw three touchdown passes and rushed for another score to lead the fourth-ranked Buffanblu to a 34-21 road win at No. 7 Kapolei Friday night.
"I think he played very well," Punahou coach Kale Ane said of Brady, who was 16-of-22 passing for 209 yards without an interception. "He was able to select his targets and he was pretty accurate and led the team to a quick start, which is always great to see as a coach, so I think he did a very good job."
Brady tossed scoring strikes of 7 and 8 yards early on to Koa Kalahiki and Moku Dancil-Evans, respectively, to give his team a 14-0 lead after the opening quarter.
Following a Vincent Terrell 2-yard TD run and a defensive score in the form of a Kennedy Freeman 1-yard pick-6, Brady connected with Koa Eldredge for a 20-yard TD pass to stretch the lead to 34-0 by halftime. He did not play in the second half.
"I think just his poise is what impressed me most," Ane said. "He's getting more and more comfortable back there. He's relatively new to playing in a tough league against tough teams, so I think he's getting more comfortable and more poised week by week."
In the opening game of the season, Brady guided Punahou to an up-and-up first half against second-ranked Kahuku. He threw for 307 yards on 27-of-53 passing with a pair of first-quarter TDs but was sacked eight times and knocked down on numerous other occasions by a menacing defense. Ultimately, the Red Raiders pulled away to a 41-28 win.
"Kahuku is a great team and they put it to us, so to be able to come back and make the corrections is one thing, but to be able to go out and do it is another thing, so he was able to take the coaching and the corrections on the field and get comfortable in the process, which is huge for us," Ane said.
Each of the Buffanblu's six games against OIA opponents will be on the road, including four straight away contests to open the season. Ane said Brady has done well to handle the pressures of playing in sometimes hostile environments.
"I think he's done a very good job. I think he hasn't let noise affect him, or the moment affect him as well. He's studied, he's prepared, we've had practices, he's got the support of his teammates and I think he understands that we believe in him and he's capable of doing a great job and just to go out and play," Ane said.
Brady, who also plays basketball, has completed 43 of his 75 passes (57.3 percent) for 516 yards this season. He has thrown five TDs against two interceptions.
"Hugh brings enthusiasm. He brings a willingness to work hard, go beyond the regular grind. He puts in more time and he wants to do well, he wants to play at another level and he wants to accept the responsibility of the position, which is big," Ane said.
Brady and the Buffanblu (1-1) were slated to play No. 10 Farrington at Edward ‘Skippa' Diaz Stadium Friday night, but due to Hurricane Lane, the game has been rescheduled to Saturday, Sept. 1.
With Hurricane Lane approaching the islands, the Hawaii State Department of Education (@HIDOE808) has announced that effective Wednesday, Aug. 22, ALL interscholastic athletic events are canceled for the rest of the week.
