MAKIKI — Playing in his first-ever varsity football game, Mason Morishige kicked the game-winning field goal from 38 yards out to lift Roosevelt over PAC-5, 17-15, in a Division II matchup at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium on Saturday.

The nail-biting win helped the Rough Riders improve to 2-0 overall, while the Wolfpack drop to 0-1 overall in their 2018 opener.

After Roosevelt took their final timeout with 40 seconds left, Sky Ogata and Nicholas Ogata got the ball down to the PAC-5 20 as the Rough Riders desperately tried to set up for a field goal with time ticking down. A Rough Riders player was late running onto the field as the ball was snapped, the kick was blocked and Sky Ogata took it to the end zone. The penalty waived off the run and pushed the attempt that was originally 33 yards back five more yards.

Given a second chance, Morishige kicked it through with no time remaining.

"We talked about just bringing the ball down and we were going for that field goal no matter what. We didn't want to make the game any longer than it is and get off the field. The goal was to get the ball close as possible and get the ball through," Roosevelt coach Kui Kahooilihala said.

The senior placekicker, who primarily plays soccer, joined the team at the urging of his friends and didn't know what to expect or really understood the last sequence of events.

"This is my first game ever playing football," said Morishige, who was 2 for 2 on PATs. "Everyone was talking to me about getting ready and warmed up. I was super scared since this was my first game too so I didn't know what to do."

For Morishige, he thought his maximum range was 35 yards, but when he was told his game-winner was from 38, he was blown away. He didn't even see the kick go through.

"To be honest, I didn't even see it go through. I closed my eyes and prayed to God that it did," Morishige said.

"It was about there. About 40 (yards)," Kahooilihala said of Morishige's range. "He practices everyday and he starts from the 15 and works his way back to the 30 and works his way back down. I wasn't really worried about his kicking. I wanted to get it as close as possible for him."

The Rough Riders opened their first offensive series with an eight-play, 65 yard drive resulting in Sky Ogata's 2-yard run on a fourth-and-goal for a 7-0 lead.

"They (PAC-5) made adjustments after that. For us, we tried to run the ball, they came out with a four front and that didn't work. We tried different things, but we're trying to stick with things we do best, but they play good defense," Kahooilihala said.

Makana Bertelmann completed an 11-yard pass, but followed up with three-straight incompletions before throwing a 29-yard pass to Angelo Coluccio on a fourth-and-10 to set up Evan Ramirez's 1-yard touchdown run. The run was no good as the Wolfpack trailed, 7-6.

Following Isaac Kaleikau's interception, four plays later, Tamaki Iijima threw a 48-yard touchdown to Josh Maikui to make it, 14-6. Iijima finished with 57 yards and an interception.

The Rough Riders outgained the Wolfpack 206 to 78 yards on the ground and Kaleikau recorded a pair of interceptions.

"Everyone came out and did their best, that's all I can ask for," Morishige said.

After PAC-5 forced Roosevelt to turn it over on downs, Bruce Shewalter finished a 13-play drive that consumed 5 minutes 17 seconds, but the run failed as the Wolfpack trailed, 14-12 at halftime.

The game wasn't pretty as both teams combined for seven turnovers that consisted of either interceptions or fumbles. PAC-5 had three turnovers and Roosevelt with four.

"All our turnovers, we have to eliminate that. It was mainly with our center and quarterback dropping balls," Kahooilihala said. "We need to be consistent and we have a lot of work."

The Wolfpack took over on the Roosevelt 37 and Laitin Bradley carried the ball six-straight times, before Rocket Uechi's pass fell incomplete. The Wolfpack came away with points as Cy Shimamura made a 26-yard field goal with 4:45 left to give PAC-5 their first and only lead of the game.

Roosevelt ran five plays to no avail before a pass interference penalty on the Wolfpack extended their drive. The Rough Riders continued to march on the ground until Sky Ogata completed a 12-yard pass to Scott Chung to convert a fourth-and-5 before burning their final timeout.

Roosevelt hosts Kaimuki (1-0) on Friday, Aug. 17 while PAC-5 looks to bounce back and plays Kalani (0-2) at Kaiser on Saturday, Aug. 18.
