WAIPAHU — Waipahu scored 20 of its 27 second-half points in the fourth quarter to upset No. 9 Waianae, 34-13, in a non-league matchup at the Masa Yonamine Complex on Friday.

The Marauders (1-0 overall), who were the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II champions last season and moved up to Division I this season, beat the Seariders (0-1 overall) for the first time since 2008 despite suiting up 27 players.

"We had 27 guys suited up tonight. Those guys took care of what we needed to take care of in regard to team rules and policies. Couldn't be more proud of them. I told the guys before the game, ‘You cannot make excuses and cannot whine we have 27 guys. It is what it is and take care of business,'" Waipahu coach Bryson Carvalho said.

Since the Marauders moved up a division, coach Carvalho scheduled scrimmages against Kahuku, Kapolei, Waianae and Damien to see what his team is made of and how they respond to tougher competition.

"The purpose of that was we wanted to use this as a measuring stick and see where we measure up to. We want to make sure we're playing quality teams and our kids are ready for that caliber game," Carvalho said.

Junior quarterback Cody Marques threw for 218 yards and no picks and scored four total touchdowns: three passing and one rushing to help lead Waipahu.

"He played outstanding, I'm super proud of him," Carvalho said of his first-year starter. "He was mobile and can get out of the pocket and made plays for us tonight. He's coming along with his reads and being able to extend plays is huge and that's stuff you cannot teach."

Alfred Failauga added 147 yards on the ground and a touchdown on 29 hard-fought carries. His 69-yard touchdown gave Waipahu the lead and the Marauders never relented.

"Everyone who scouts us knows we have Alfred in the backfield. It's no secret. If we are able to run the football and control the line of scrimmage, it can open up our passing game," Carvalho said.

Kenneth Joseph Jr.'s 24-yard touchdown put Waianae on the scoreboard first and he followed up with the PAT for a 7-0 lead. Joseph finished with 203 all-purpose yards for the game and accounted for all of Waianae's points.

Waipahu had a chance to tie the game up but Marques' would-be 75-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Fiesta was called back on a helmet-to-helmet penalty near the Marauders sideline. Waianae's defense tightened up to drive Waipahu back 12 yards to force a punt.

The Marauders received the ball with 53.8 seconds remaining in the first half. Failauga rushed for a 4-yard gain before Waipahu called timeout with 47.1 seconds left on the clock. Following the timeout, Marques hit a wide-open Branson Jay Reyes down the sideline for 81 yards to tie the game at 7 heading into halftime.

After Waipahu forced Waianae to turn it over on downs, Failauga rushed for a 3-yard gain on the first play of the series before breaking loose for a 69-yard score and Brycen Amorozo's PAT gave the Marauders a 14-7 lead in the third quarter.

"We were a block away so there were some adjustments we made with the blocking scheme. Once we were able to do that, we were able to succeed running the football," Carvalho said.

Marques threw his second touchdown of the night, a 10-yard pass to Jeff Badua that capped a 14-play, 65-yard scoring drive, but Waianae blocked the PAT to make it, 20-7.

The Seariders made it a one-score game after Kevin Poepoe threw a 33-yard touchdown to Joseph, but the run failed to trail, 20-13, with 7:13 remaining in the fourth quarter. Poepoe finished with 139 yards on 9-of-18 passing and two interceptions.

Marques scrambled and extended the play with his legs to throw a 67-yard strike to Devin Espiritu and redeemed Aaron Feliciano's interception seven plays later with a 2-yard keeper to put the game out of reach.

Waipahu's defense bent but didn't break as it forced Waianae to finish 0 for 5 on fourth down conversions. Abraham Montero had three tackles-for-loss. Feliciano and Jovan Gooman each had interceptions.

"Our philosophy was to swarm and punish. That's what they did tonight. They continuously swarmed to the football and I'm super proud of them. A lot of them played both ways but the heart, you can't measure that. Fourth down were crucial downs and they really stepped up when it came down to the wire," Carvalho said of his defense's performance.

Zefften Thompson-Avilla had three tackles-for-loss to lead the Seariders defense and Angus Ramaila added two.

Waianae will take on top-ranked Saint Louis in the second game of an Open Division doubleheader at Aloha Stadium on Friday, Aug. 10.

The Marauders travel to Kozuki Stadium to play No. 15 Iolani on Saturday, Aug. 11 at 3 p.m. to start Division I play.
