Female Athlete of the Week: Jada Young, Moanalua softball
Jada Young put forth her best individual outing last Thursday and it happened to coincide with Moanalua's biggest win on the season.

Young, a right-handed pitcher, tossed a five-inning shut out to lead Na Menehune to an 11-0 win over previously-undefeated Kaiser in a Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I East game at Moanalua. The 5-foot-6 sophomore scattered three hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

It was, by far, her most effective appearance in 2018. After walking the lead off batter, Young retired the next eight. She logged first-pitch strikes to 11 of the 21 batters she faced and recorded 45 of her 71 total pitches for strikes.

Moanalua first-year coach Dean Oshiro was unable to take in Young's performance first hand.

"The funny part is I was out on a business trip so I wasn't even here, but that's what happened," Oshiro said.

"(Young) struggles once in a while, but I guess she was on her game that day, from what I was told. Especially after the way we played the first game against (Kaiser) — where we fell behind early and because their pitcher is pretty good it, it was hard to come back — this was a big win. I wouldn't call it payback, but at least the girls showed up to play this time."

Young worked her way out of a big-time jam in the top of the third — when the game was still scoreless.

After Young got the first two outs of the inning, she allowed back-to-back singles before issuing a walk — after an eight-pitch at-bat to Primrose Aholelei — to load the bases for Cougars' clean-up hitter Christiana Aholelei. However, Young got her to fly out to right field for the third out to strand all three base runners.

It was just the fourth complete game recorded by a Moanalua pitcher this season. Young is responsible for all but one of those occurrences. She has already logged 21 innings this season and has a 3-1 record with a 4.02 ERA after going 1-1 with three saves and a 1.79 ERA in 23 2/3 innings of work as a freshman last season.

"I think she throws harder this year and as a sophomore coming back, she's got a little more experience than when she was a freshman on varsity last year. Sometimes you see the deer-in-headlights thing with freshmen, but you don't see that from her this year," Oshiro said. "She's up for the challenge, she's not afraid and she's still young, but she's willing to go and challenge and that's what we're looking for."

Young is part of a trio of pitchers that Oshiro has utilized this season. Fellow sophomore Mari Kimoto (0-1, 8.06 ERA) has thrown 16 2/3 innings, while senior Kyler Tsukada (4-0, 3.33) has recorded 21 innings of work.

Young did not pitch in the first game against Kaiser — a 6-4 loss for Na Menehune back on March 3.

"With the three of them now, we try not to throw the same girl versus the same team the second time around and give them a different look. It doesn't always work out, but it did this time," said Oshiro, who is hopeful the pitching-by-committee strategy this season will pay dividends in years to come.

"When Kyler leaves, those two will have to step up and try to lead the others, but for now it's nice not to have to rely on one. They may not be the hardest throwers, but they throw strikes and I don't mind losing if the other team hits, but I don't want it to be off of walks, beans and wild pitches and lose that way. We just want our girls to throw strikes, know that we're not going to overpower anybody, but just be smart and mix up your pitches and that's it."

Thursday's win was Moanalua's six in its last seven games to improve its record to 7-3. Oshiro would like nothing better than for his team to keep the momentum going in its final two regular-season games (against Kailua Thursday and Farrington Saturday) before the start of the league playoffs.

"I think that game was a confidence booster because on Monday, Kuhio Day, we ended up getting it handed to us by Roosevelt (in an 18-7 loss), but we came back and beat Castle (Tuesday) and then beat a team that was undefeated at the time in Kaiser, and not only that, but to shut them out … we've been preaching to the girls that we trust them as players and they need to trust us as coaches," Oshiro said. "We may not always be right, but that's part of the process and we as coaches try to put certain players in certain positions, trusting that they will execute and give us a chance to win, which Jada did that day."

Male Athlete of the Week: Puukani De Sa, Hilo baseball

In one sense, Puukani De Sa had a spectacular week. In another, he did what he always does: drive in runs.

The Hilo senior batted a combined 8 for 10 (.800) with 11 runs batted in to lead his team to three wins last week in Big Island Interscholastic Federation play to raise his batting average to .552 on the season.

De Sa, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound second baseman and No. 3 hitter in the lineup, opened his week with a 2-for-3 effort in an 11-1 win over Hawaii Prep in five innings Thursday afternoon. He drove in three runs and scored another in the victory.

Later that day, he posted a 3-for-3 showing at the plate with five RBI and two runs scored in an 18-3 win over Keaau in four innings before closing out the week with a 3-for-4 day with three RBI and two runs scored in Saturday's 15-5 win over Konawaena in six innings.

"I think what impressed me most was just the way he was able to square up on the ball," said eighth-year coach Tony De Sa, Puukani's father. "He usually has to wait for the runners ahead of him to advance to second by stealing, so he's not getting balls that he can drive. He usually gets balls that he has to go with, so we've just been working on that a lot, but he's been doing this all along, all these years. He's just an RBI guy; he likes to hit when people are on base."

Tony De Sa said part of his son's success can be traced to his swing mechanics.

"I think his swing pattern — I cannot say it's level — but it's a little flatter than most," he said.

The mental approach to the game has also been a long-time work-in-progress for both father and son.

"I sit by him in the car every day, so we work on those kinds of things and he looks forward to them," Tony De Sa said.

Puukani De Sa's 21 runs batted in on the season is tops in the state — by far. The next closest player is Kailua's Jalen Ah Yat, who has 14 RBI on the year. De Sa is also tied for the state lead in hits (16) and second in batting average.

The Vikings have the luxury of their first five batters in the lineup being seniors, including leadoff man Micah Bello — who leads the state in batting average (.571), stolen bases (12) and runs scored (17) — and No. 2 hitter Donald Saltiban, who owns a .308 batting average.

"They're awesome," coach De Sa said of the pair. "They're always on base. Micah has been doing a tremendous job, both he and Donald Saltiban have been getting on base consistently and setting up Puukani."

Puukani, who bats left and throws right, is one of seven seniors on the team who have experienced their share of heartbreak over the years. Hilo has lost its first game in the state tournament in each of the last three seasons.

"We've been on a bad streak the last few years and we haven't been able to get over that hump, but they've been talking about that all year, about wanting to get back to states and move on and get a championship, so it's definitely motivating them this season," Tony De Sa said.

As the only boy of four children, Puukani grew up with a special bond with his father-slash-coach.

"I wish I had a couple more boys to throw the ball around with, but that's not the case and it's been just him and me mostly, but it's allowed me to spend a lot of time with him," the elder De Sa said.

Hilo (8-1) has now won its last four games since its lone blemish on its record: a 4-3 loss to cross-town rival Waiakea in eight innings on March 20.

The Vikings moved into this week's ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Baseball Power Rankings at No. 10 this week. They will visit undefeated Kamehameha-Hawaii Thursday before closing out the regular season against Waiakea on Apr. 14.
