Kaiser, Campbell move on in OIA playoffs

Kaiser and Campbell are moving on in the playoffs.

The Cougars' Kaile Halvorsen and the Sabers' Hokulei Ishikawa each had a hat trick to lead their respective teams to victory in the opening round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I tournament Monday night at Kaiser Stadium.

Kaiser, the eighth ranked team in the Hawaiian Electric/Girls Soccer Power Rankings, knocked off Kapolei, 4-3, in the nightcap while Campbell shutout Kalani, 6-0, in the early game.

The Cougars (9-2) move on to take on No. 7 Aiea (8-2) Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. while the Sabers (8-3) will face fifth-ranked Moanalua (9-0-1) right after. Both games will be played on Moanalua's field.

In the first contest at Kaiser Stadium, Ishikawa got the scoring going in the eighth minute before knocking through her second goal 10 minutes later. Taelor Berlarmino-Bruce got on the board in the 21st minute and then Ishikawa completed the hat trick four minutes later.

Cheyenne Smith and Nicole Morneau also put in first half goals for the Sabers.

Kaiser was even quicker in its scoring.

Halvorsen scored in the opening minute and Shaley Mercado added a goal two minutes later to give the Cougars a commanding 2-0 lead.

Jocelyn Lono got on the board for the Hurricanes in the eighth minute to keep Kapolei in it, but Halvorsen added two goals right before the end of the first half to make it a 4-1 game at the break.

Kayla Villanueva put through a goal in the 67th minute and Heather Kolona scored in the 78th minute for Kapolei, but the first half deficit was too big for the Hurricanes to overcome and Kaiser was able to hold on for the win.
