First half surge lifts Makai over Mauka, 31-14

The second edition of the Polynesian Bowl gave fans much more scoring.

Team Makai jumped out to a 17-0 halftime lead en route to a 31-14 win over Team Mauka before a crowd of 4,792 at Hawaiian Tel FCU Field at Aloha Stadium Saturday night.

Toa Taua, who committed to the University of Nevada, Reno in the third quarter, scored two rushing touchdowns to lead Team Makai.

Konawaena's Austin Ewing, the two-time All-Hawaii Division II Offensive Player of the Year, was also key for Team Makai. He was able to move to rush for a first down on the third down and was able to throw two completions to move the chains in the third quarter.

During halftime the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame class of 2018 were honored. The class includes Herman Clark, Maake Kemoeatu, Manu Tuiasosopo, Kimo Von Oelhoffen and Bob Apisa.

Former Lahainaluna defensive end and current Washington State player Hercules Mataafa and the Pittsburgh Steelers Juju Smith-Schuster were also honored respectively as the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year and the Polynesian Pro Football Player of the Year.
