Iolani holds off upset-minded Mid-Pacific
Iolani's Kellie Okamura brings the ball up the floor against Mid-Pacific. Greg Yamamoto | SLThe Raiders made a late fourth quarter push to put away pesky Mid-Pacific, 54-49, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I contest at Iolani's Lower Gymnasium.
The game was much closer than the first matchup where the Raiders won 77-52 back on Dec. 14.
The Raiders (10-6 overall, 4-2 ILH) got contributions from their starters, who scored 50 of the team's 54 points. Kellie Okamura led Iolani with 13 points and made three 3-pointers. Alexsandra Huntimer scored 10 points while Tori-Lynn Maeda, Lily Wahinekapu, and Taylor Wu each added nine.
Payton Antonio led the Owls (8-9 overall, 2-5 ILH) with 16 points, 12 points came off of four 3-pointers and Brillie Kovaloff added 14 points before fouling out late in the fourth. Paige Farhni chipped in nine points and eight boards.
Antonio made it a one-point game, 42-41 after sinking her fourth 3-pointer, but Iolani pulled away with a 6-1 run after Wu's steal and layup, 48-42. Alexsandra Huntimer knocked down timely jumpers and the Raiders were able to put it away at the free throw line.
Iolani had an advantage on the boards as it outrebounded Mid-Pacific, 34 to 25. The Owls shot better from the 3-point line finishing 7 of 16 while the Raiders shot 4 of 15.
The Raiders travel to Kekuhaupio Gymnasium to take on No. 2 Kamehameha on Jan. 9. The Owls head to the Clarence T.C. Ching Gymnasium to take on top-ranked Maryknoll on the same night.
