KAILUA — Kamehameha captured their second consecutive Surfriders Holiday Classic title after rolling past Interscholastic League of Honolulu rival Iolani, 47-30, at Kailua's Harry Murai Gymnasium on Saturday.

"We wanted to make a statement again. We pretty much return everyone and we have a strong team this year and wanted to show everyone what we're made of," said Warriors' guard Kamren Victorino-Kato.

Both ILH Division I teams will be participating in the 2017 OIA-ILH Challenge at Moanalua and the Iolani Classic in the coming weeks.

"It was a sloppy game from both teams. Both teams didn't shoot particularly well. When you had opporunities, you have to take care of them. We were okay tonight. For our third game in three days, I'm pretty pleased with what we did this week," said Kamehameha coach Greg Tacon.

Kamren Victorino-Kato led all scorers with 17 points, four assists, and two blocks while teammate Kobe Young added 13 points.

After losing 6-foot-9 First Team All-Hawaii center Hugh Hogland to graduation, it's a new season for Iolani, who is trying to incorporate new faces while expanding the roles for several returning players.

"It's a transition for everyone. Whether you were here or weren't. The guys who were here are now going to be starters and be full-time players and they're going to play in closer game situations in the end they weren't in last year. The new guys are trying to survive on varsity with us. It's a transition for everybody but it's going alright so far and pleased with the progress," said Iolani coach Dean Shimamoto.

Frank Felix and Vance Hamada each scored six points to lead the Raiders, who had trouble shooting the ball finishing 9 of 48 (18.7 percent) from the field and shot 1 of 16 from the 3-point line.

"They (Kamehameha) are long and they contested every shot. Even when it seemed open, they close ground quickly so our guys have to get used to shooting in those types of situations. We're a little short-handed and fatigue played a little bit of a role over the course of the last few days and when you don't have legs it's hard to shoot. I think it played a role, didn't tell the whole story, but it didn't help," said Shimamoto.

The first quarter saw three ties with the score deadlocked at 10 until Kamehameha created breathing room in the second quarter after Laamea Frank hit a 3 from the left wing and Victorino-Kato sank a shot in the paint for a 19-12 lead.

Iolani scored only two points in the second quarter off of Kawika Lee's layup around the 4:09 mark and went scoreless for the rest of the quarter.

"First quarter they had 10. Second quarter they had two. I thought we played great defensively. Lots of communication and switches were nice and clean. We just couldn't hit some shots to create some separation," said Tacon.

The Warriors opened up the third quarter with a baseline jumper from Young and Victorino-Kato attacked the basket in transition and completed the 3-point play for a 24-12 lead. Kamehameha took a 15-point lead, but the Raiders were able to whittle it down to seven following Cole Hogland's dunk in transition, but Iolani could get no closer.

"We're making progress and we wanted to see where we stacked up today. I know both of us aren't trying to show their full package or give the full go and it was good to see where they're at and we're at," said Shimamoto.

Kamehameha shot 19 of 43 (44 percent) and Victorino-Kato felt they can do better.

"We shot the ball horribly today. We've been shooting the ball pretty bad, but we got good a defense and were able to score," said Victorino-Kato.

Kamehameha opened the fourth on a 10-2 run following Victorino-Kato's 3-pointer, Young's dunk and Frank found a cutting Victorino-Kato, who again converted the 3-point play and coasted from there on out.

"We're taking more pride on defense. If we play good defense, we can get in transition and score," said Victorino-Kato. "Coach tells me every time I get a long rebound to go. I'm going all the way or if someone picks me up, I will look to dish."

Iolani made one field goal in the fourth off of Shayden Molina's putback and shot 4 of 9 from the free throw line for their six quarter points.

The Warriors and Raiders play each other again in league play on Jan. 6 and Jan. 20.
