Winham defends girls state cross country title

Seabury Hall's Veronica Winham successfully defended her individual girls state title at the Honolulu Marathon/HHSAA Cross Country State Championships at Kauai Community College Saturday morning.

Winham, a Seabury Hall senior, completed the five-kilometer course in a time of 19 minutes, 16.10 seconds. She finished more than 30 seconds ahead of runner-up Johanna Seng (19:47.37), a Hawaii Baptist freshman.

St. Andrew's Priory senior Jordan Jones (20:02.24) placed third, while Windham's Spartan teammates, Darby Mulligan (20:06.21) and Kallalei Ryden (20:08.07), finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Punahou finished with 19 points to run away with run away with its sixth consecutive D1 girls team title and 30th overall. Iolani (51 points), Kamehameha (112), Hilo (136) and Leilehua (152) followed the Buffanblu in the team standings.

Seabury Hall claimed its sixth straight D2 girls team crown with 23 points. Runner-up Hawaii Baptist finished with 46 points.

Kalaheo senior Colby Otero won the boys' race in a time of 16:21.91. He was followed by Castle senior Hudson Lockette (16:44.74), Iolani senior Jason Wang (16:51.52), Kapaa sophomore Garret Smith (16:51.52) and Iolani senior Nicholas Arima (16:51.52) to round out the top five.

The D1 boys team title went to Iolani for a third straight year. The Raiders posted 39 points, while runner-up Maui was a distant second with 97 points. Punahou (105), Waiakea (112) and Kalaheo (170) rounded out the top five.

Hawaii Baptist (42 points) edged Hawaii Prep (49) for the D2 boys championship.
