Leilehua's Maeha claims third individual state bowling crown

Leilehua senior Gwen Maeha put on a dominating performance en route to her third consecutive individual title at the 44th Annual Billy Tees/HHSAA Bowling State Championships, which were held Thursday and Friday at Kauai Lanes in Lihue.

Maeha led wire to wire, rolling an opening game of 247 in Thursday's opening session and finishing with 1,799 total pins, 80 better than runner-up Kourtney Adams of Campbell.

Mid-Pacific's Saige Yamada (1,625 pins), Aiea's Kiana Sato (1,613) and Maryknoll's Raquel Takayama (1,604) rounded out the top five girls.

Campbell freshman Josiah Benner-Eslit won the individual boys title with a nine-game total of 1,841 pins. He stood in second place after Thursday's first session, and seventh after the second.

Mid-Pacific's Kai Yamada (1,793 pins), Kapolei's Jake Brett (1,749), Castle's Reese Shimatsu (1,733) and Saint Louis' Hunter Lum (1,715) rounded out the top five boys.

Pearl City edged Campbell for the girls' team title, while the Mililani held off Kapolei for the boys' crown.

It is the 13th championship for the Chargers and second for the Trojans.
