Mililani downs Farrington in straight sets

SALT LAKE — Mililani (10-1) downed Farrington (9-4) in straight sets, 25-23, 25-18, 25-16, Thursday night in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I girls volleyball playoffs quarterfinal matchup at Moanalua High School.

The Governors jumped out to 7-2 lead in the first set, but the Trojans — sporting pink jerseys — rallied off several strings of consecutive scoring runs to tie it at 11 points each. The score would be tied six more times before the Trojans closed it out for a win in set one.

Set two had a tied score five times before Mililani broke a 9-9 game with a 7-1 scoring run to propel the Trojans to take the second set. Junior Gabby Naniseni rattled off five of those seven points with two block assists, a kill and two service aces. She finished the match with five kills.

Farrington scored the first point of the third set with an ace from Jerica Vele, but it was all Mililani from there on as they cruised to a victory sweep.

Trojans sophomore Aysia Miller set a season-high 29 assists with fellow sophomore Falanika Danielson leading the way on 12 kills, three aces and six digs. Junior Starr Sergent followed with seven kills and five digs, and senior Kylee Aiwohi racked up six kills and an assist.

For the Govs, senior Violet Williams had a team-high 16 kills while junior Saryiah Kahakai and senior Anuhea Hughes had double digit digs with 13 and 12, respectively.

Mililani, the second seed out of the West division, advances to the OIA D1 semifinals to take on East top seed Moanalua (12-0) next Monday at 5:30 p.m. at McKinley High School.

The two teams met up in last year's OIA semifinals as well, in which the Trojans came out as victors.

Both Mililani and Moanalua — as well as Kapolei (11-0) and Waianae (10-2) in the other semifinal matchup — have secured a berth in the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I state tournament later this month.

Farrington will now battle for a chance at finishing fifth in the OIA D1 Playoffs. They will take on Aiea (8-4) next Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Farrington High School.

The winner of that match will earn one of the OIA's two remaining state tournament spots.
