Male Athlete of the Week: Ryan Chang, Mililani footbal
Ryan Chang made his presence felt early and often Friday night.

The wide receiver caught eight passes for 163 yards, including three touchdowns, to help Mililani remain undefeated with its resounding 42-6 road win over Farrington.

The victory — which kept the third-ranked Trojans (5-0 overall) in sole possession of first place in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I Red Conference standings at 4-0 — served as a breakout game for Chang, who had just six catches for 116 yards and one TD entering the weekend.

"Ryan played awesome, obviously," Mililani coach Rod York said. "He's exceptional because of the speed that he has. I'm not sure what his 40 time is, but he's probably the fastest guy on our team."

Chang, a 5-foot-10, 160-pound junior, was on the receiving end of TD passes of 21 and 15 yards from quarterback Dillon Gabriel to help the Trojans jump out to a quick 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

"He works hard on his route-running and he's blessed with speed, and then you put his work ethic on top of the talent that he has and that's why he's doing so well," York said.

When Farrington scored on a long pass play to cut the Mililani lead to 14-6 with about four minutes left in the opening quarter, Chang answered by hauling in a 57-yard TD pass from Gabriel just 41 seconds later.

"Farrington was gaining momentum because they had just scored, so we threw a screen play and then we hit Ryan on the streak," York said. "Definitely, it was a momentum-changer because the momentum had just changed over and then when he scored the touchdown it kind of took the wind out of the sails for Farrington."

York said Farrington's man-to-man coverage and focus on stopping the run opened up opportunities for Chang outside.

"They didn't give him over-the-top help and he was able to get free three times. A lot of that is the fact that he's one of the hardest workers on the team," York said. "He's always working on his craft and a lot of that hard work in the offseason has paid off and he definitely came up big for us Friday night."

As a sophomore last season, Chang posted 31 receptions for 472 yards and six TDs.

"Ryan has the talent, obviously, but with one year under his belt on the varsity he's matured more," York said. "He runs the best routes and he can cut on a dime. The thing that separates him is he creates separation with his cutting ability, but he can also get behind you with his speed."

York noted that the offense further benefits from the fact that Chang and Gabriel have been teammates for several years now.

"They played together seventh grade, eighth grade, ninth grade and they were both on the varsity as sophomores, so they have a pretty tight connection. They're always working after practice on timing," York said.

Chang and the Trojans return to the gridiron Friday when they will visit No. 10 Kapolei.

Female Athlete of the Week: Violet Williams, Farrington volleyball
Over several seasons of club volleyball, Kelly Ong had always admired the type of player that she saw in Violet Williams from afar.

That's why the first-year Farrington girls volleyball coach was so thrilled to have Williams on her team for the high school season.

Williams certainly proved her worth last Tuesday. The senior outside hitter put down a match-high 10 kills to help the Governors post an upset over defending league champion Kahuku in three sets. The scores were 16-25, 25-19 and 15-9.

"I thought she did a fantastic job leading the team, not only vocally, but by example," Ong said. "She did a really great job keeping her teammates calm, positive and focused, whether we were up or down, whether we won a big point or lost a big point."

Williams had an all-around solid match, finishing with six digs and two block assists. She also recorded two of her team's five service aces and had one assist.

"She was able to not only set the block well, taking away certain areas of the court, or certain hitter's strengths so we can slow the ball down and transition it and she also did a good job of hitting; not only going up and getting her kills like she always does, but changing it up and mixing in some roll shots to keep the defense honest and she hit the open shots," Ong said.

The come-from-behind win Tuesday served as Kahuku's first loss of the season.

"Violet is our heart and soul and it definitely shows that she wants it this year and that type of attitude and effort is helping the rest of the team realize that if we stick together as a team, then good things against a good team like Kahuku can happen," Ong said.

Ong said she was impressed with Williams' ability from an early age.

"I've seen her play setter, outside, opposite — she's played every position in not only her age group, but also the age group above her and I've always known that she's a great all-around player and I'm very honored and blessed to have her because she makes my job a lot easier," Ong said.

Since taking over the program, Ong said she has greatly relied on Williams to provide much-needed senior leadership.

"She's always that fire, that spark and I was just hoping that she would continue that when I came in and being that it's her senior year, she's taken that very seriously and it's the greatest thing to have a senior just step up and put it all on her shoulders," Ong said. "She not only pushes all her teammates, but also is the hardest worker, so it's a great tool to have. She's been one-in-a-million for me. I've coached a lot and she's probably one of the best leaders I've been able to coach in a long time."

Ong said the versatility of Williams — one of two six-rotation players for the Govs — allows her to be flexible with the rest of the lineup.

"We were having her play opposite in the first set and because she's so versatile, we also have her set if we're passing well, but if we're not passing well then we don't ask her to set because it would be asking her to do too much and running around the floor would be too difficult," Ong said.

Since dropping its season opener to Kalani in straight sets, Farrington (4-1) has reeled off four consecutive wins to pull into a tie for second in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division.

"I think they were playing nervous and were scared to make a mistake, but give credit to Kalani because they dug everything," Ong said. "Since that game we've taken that as a stepping stone and learned from it. I think things are coming together and they've played a lot better since then."

Williams and the Govs return to the court next Tuesday, when they host Castle.
