HALAWA — Despite not playing for 20 days, the Crusaders still found ways to rack up the points.

Second-ranked Saint Louis scored 23 points in the third quarter to rout No. 5 Kamehameha, 44-0, in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu opener at Hawaiian Tel FCU Field at Aloha Stadium on Friday.

The Crusaders (3-0 overall, 1-0 ILH) continue the scoring onslaught and have outscored their opponents, 154 to 7. This was their first game since playing Baldwin on Aug. 12.

The Warriors completed their non-league schedule undefeated but drop to 3-1 overall, 0-1 league.

Kainalu Tumpap scored two rushing touchdowns, and Chevan Cordeiro found eight different receivers, passed for 248 yards and a score and added 59 rush yards and two touchdowns. Jonah Panoke led all Crusader receivers with eight catches for 105 yards.

Following a Warrior punt, the Crusaders scored five plays later on Tumpap's 4-yard run. Tumpap added another rushing touchdown after a partially blocked punt to make it 14-0.

"The first two drives were good. We felt good moving the ball. After that we stopped and I'm not happy. We should score every time when we get the ball. We have a lot of work to do," said Saint Louis coach Cal Lee.

Thomas "Boogie" Yam had one incompletion on Kamehameha's second offensive series and did not return. Yam was previously banged up in their non-league game against Carson (California).

The Warriors rotated Onyx Freitas, Skyler Ramos, and Brandon Baniaga at quarterback and combined for 44 yards on 4-of-11 passing.

Kanoa Shannon was the only consistent source of offense for Kamehameha with 48 yards in the first half, finishing with 89 yards on 26 attempts.

"It's tough when you lose a guy like Boogie. We had to come into the game with what we had and do our best. They all fought hard did what we could and that's all we can ask for," said Kamehameha coach Abu Maafala.

Saint Louis ran a 14-play drive got all the way down to the Kamehameha 1, but on a third-and-goal, Jonah Kahahawai-Welch knocked the ball out of Cordeiro's hand and Joshua Mahelona recovered the fumble.

"They (defense) played their tails off. It's tough to play defense when your offense can't do anything. We go into the half 14-0 and we're still in the game. Saint Louis is an unbelievable team, they got depth and were able to roll with their guys on both sides of the ball," said Maafala.

Cordeiro's 45-yard pass to Tosh Kekahuna-Kalawe helped set up Cordeiro's 4-yard touchdown run two plays later for a 21-0 lead with 8:19 remaining.

"Our bye week helped us and playing against our defense helped prepare us," said Cordeiro.

After the Warriors turned it over on downs on the Saint Louis 27, the Crusaders scored six plays later capped by Cordeiro's 12-yard pass to Jonah Panoke.
