Hawaii Prep cools off Waianae, 3-1

For the first time since 2010, Hawaii Prep is in the final four.

Unseeded Ka Makani handed second-seeded Waianae its first loss of the season, 3-1, in the first round of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Division II state tournament Thursday afternoon at Hans L'Orange Park.

Jonah Hurney fired a three-hitter in a complete game effort to help Hawaii Prep hold the Seariders, the Oahu Interscholastic Association champion, to a season-low in runs scored.

Hawaii Prep got off to a hot start, scoring one run on three hits in the top of the first inning. Waianae responded with one run in the bottom of the second to keep the score tied at 1 for the next two innings.

Hurney helped his own cause with a leadoff triple in the top of the fifth. Battery mate Braden Kojima followed this up with a bases on balls to put runners on the corners.

Three-hole hitter Finn Richmond drove Hurney in for the go-ahead run with an RBI to left field with not outs. After a pitching change for Waianae, Michael Hughes singled to right to plate pinch runner Todd Hill for the final score of the game.

Macaiah Borling was tagged with the loss for the Seariders. He was pulled in favor of right fielder Konan Keliikoa after Ka Makani took the lead in the fifth inning.

Hawaii Prep moves on to face third-seeded Damien Friday 1 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium at the University of Hawaii of Manoa.
